I bought my own birthday present today - Mum has gifted a day trip to Vienna on me and I went to buy the tickets. So I thought travelling would be a fitting topic for the first day of the party. I'll ask several questions in separate comments and we'll see what happens. :))

Oh, and feel free to ask questions of your own in separate comments, too, to keep the discussion going!

Edit: The Xmas pocket letter pics I promised

Back

Scanning them in produced slightly better colours than taking photos, but still not that much better, I'm afraid.

Edit 2: Oddly enough, I can't see the pics on my iPad, but when I click on them, it goes to the original on Pinterest. Cyberlife is strange.

1. Is there a place where you keep returning? Why?

For me, it is various Austrian cities. Mum can't make longer journeys anymore, we both love Austria and its inhabitants and we both speak the language. Vienna, St Pölten, Krems and Graz are our great favourites.

Yes, Ireland.
It's just that I feel really at home there ... I must've been Irish in a former life.
(Or English. Ha!)

Do you think the Irish would appreciate you not making a difference? *g*

They probably wouldn't. ;-)

I really love both countries but if I were offered a trip to one of both I'd probably choose Ireland.
I've been to Britain the last 3 years, though, but not to Ireland for some time ... that's probably why!

I've never been to Ireland. At all. Or to Scotland, unfortunately. I've been to England several times (mostly to London and once to Cambridge), and I took part on a package holiday to Wales once. That was grand, especially after having read all those Cadfael novels by Ellis Peters.

Actually it's Las Vegas, Nevada. Mostly, though, for the FEI World Cup that is there semi regularly.

2. Which was the most beautiful journey you have ever made?

For me, it was an 11-day trip to South France, quite a few years ago.

3. Where would you go if you had the chance and the means?

France again. There are lots of medieval towns I haven't seen yet. And i'd love to have enough time to properly explore Carcassonne. We had so little time for it.

There was a time I didn't care about accommodations, as long as I had a roof above my head and a bed in which to sleep. But as I'm getting older, creature comforts are becoming more important.

It is the same for me with Austria. It is so close and train connections are so excellent that it is easier to reach than many places within our own country.

Is taking a heavy fall on your way home - the very distance you walk at least twice every day - mean that you are getting old? Because if it does, I am feeling my age keenly right now.

Hmmm... Let's see... Romania, Germany and the Netherlands don't really count, as I have lived in those for at least a year each (usually longer). But i've been on package holidays to the UK, Belgium, Luxemburg, Sweden and, of course, France and Switzerland, mostly 3 or more countries within 10-11 days. It was stressful, but I enjoyed each trip greatly.

Thanks for sharing the pictures with us, they are awesome.

There are a number of places I would love to visit and Budapest is one of them but at the moment I am not planning any journeys. I need to get my workroots firmly planted before I can plan anything but I do have a passport.

What a great birthday present, especially with the good rail connections! In some ways, a day trip is more fun than a longer one because one doesn't have to fuss with finding hotels and packing and remembering all the things one has forgotten to bring once one gets there.
