As an avid fan of The Great British Bake Off, I particularly like the Masterclass parts, where Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood share their tips and recipes with us mere mortals. Not long ago, in one of the re-runs, Mary Berry baked a fantastic-looking apricot and marzipan pie and I knew that I just had to try my hand at it - even though I personally hate marzipan.

I managed to write down the recipe in a great hurry (and even to read it afterwards), but I knew I only had a chance to give it a try if I got myself one of those eminently practical lose bottom tart tins. I saw the right size in St. Pölten, but it was insanely expensive (most likely because it was a Jamie Oliver brand), so I gave up on it. Fortunately, I found a much simpler one in the Auchan supermarket - unfortunately, it was about twice the size that I really needed - one with a 28 cm diameter, instead of a 20 cm one.

I bought it nonetheless, since the only other model was even larger, and made mental acrobatics to multiply the ingredient measures given by Mary Berry. Well... I did make the pie, but it turned out I didn't have enough filling for such a large one, so I had to improvise, filling the empty places with dried apricots and things like that, and my dough broke like whoa, so I couldn't roll it out properly. I can only hope that it will at least prove tasty when we tomorrow cut it with our guests.

Have a look at the poor thing. It's a bit ugly, the poor dear, but I put my heart's blood and all my love into it:

I know, and between the apricots and the marzipan I imagine it would be very sweet (which I love, but it's a matter of taste very much). I think you should easily be able to replace the marzipan with something not quite that sweet, or leave it completely.

Leaving out completely will be the way. I wanted to try this recipe just once because it looked so delicious on TV and Mary Berry made it seem so easy to make, but the results, while tasty, aren't really worth the effort. There are lots of delicious fruit tart recipes in my book of secrets titled Backvergnügen wie noch nie, only without a Teigdecke, so I think I'll be able to put my wondrous new tart tin to good use.

I'm sure you will! I use my tart tin for so many things, it's just handy to have one.

What do you use it for? Any hints?

Wait tart tin is that the one with the low rim, isn't it? I mostly use the tin with the high rim. Sorry!

With the low and wavy rim, yes. *g*
