Advent has come late this year and - according to Florian Silbereisen, who moderates "The Advent Feast of 100 000 Lights" on German TV - hasn't been this short for quite a few decades. But it has started today, and I've realized that I'm behind schedule. So I hurriedly hung up last year's Advent calendar in my room, putting tiny Milka chocolate bars into the backpack of the Christmas elves, who form a lovely little Christmas tree on my wall.

See for yourself:

And I baked a square pear cake today - granted, it isn't part of the Christmas baking, but we happened to have pears that were too hard for Mum to eat them raw, so I needed a method to make them enjoyable for her:

The pictures aren't very good, because the Pinterest app is acting up and refuses to let me upload photos directly from my iPad. So I have to mail them to myself first, resize them and do all possible tricks to make them visible, but it still isn't the same. Drat.

Pear cake recipe:

80 gr butter or margarine
60 gr sugar
2 eggs
20 ml milk
250 gr flour
1 pinch of salt
1 pckg baking powder
1 pckg lemon zest
600 gr pears, peeled and diced
1 tblsp of lemon juice

Pre-heat oven to 180°C and butter a square baking tin.
Peel and dice pears. Sprinkle them with the lemon juice.
Stir butter, sugar and eggs until they blend.
Add other ingredients at will; the pears should be the last, though.
Pour the whole thing in the tin and bake it 35-40 minutes.
Let it cool a few minutes before - how does one say in English stürzen?

It is ridiculously easy, and the preparation doesn't take long, either.
