Beowulf - Return to the Shieldlands
Nov. 7th, 2017 01:56 amI've just found the series by accident in St Pölten - never heard of it before. But I am a great fan of the poem and its various interprerations - I own three Vera different films on DVD - and so I bought it. So far, I have seen the first 3 episodes and all the extras, and I must admit that I am blown away. I can't understand why it got so many negative critics and why it was axed. I find it fantastic.

Date: 2017-11-12 09:55 pm (UTC)I grew up with Star Trek on TV, and gravitated towards Spock from an early age because I have a pointed ear and was convinced I was part Vulcan. This was when I was maybe six, so between ST and Doctor Who, my love of Sci-Fi was set in stone at an early age.
OMG, Forbidden Planet is one of my favourite movies! I first saw that when I w\s just a little kid, and tit freaked me out but I adored it! Same with Andromeda Strain, an underrated classic IMHO, and the deservedly highly rated classic Day the Earth Stood Still. Never seen the remake, nor do I want to. I've got Enemy Mine on DVD, that's a great movie too. Actually, I've got Andromeda Strain on DVD too. I taped all of them off the TV but I've gradually replaced them with DVDs when I've had the chance.

The Andromeda Strain remake would have made an interesting film of it's own but was too far gone from the original, IMO. I find that government conspiracy trope really boring.

Date: 2017-11-12 11:54 pm (UTC)I was surprised to find thee's an Andromeda Strain mini series, but if it moves away from the original storyline I doubt I'd be interested. I'm too much of a fan of the original. Same with Planet of the Apes - love the original movie and some of the sequels, but not the remakes. Better make-up and special effects do not necessarily make for better movies.
Makes me sad that so few black and white movies get shown on TV these days too. They always used to get shown in the afternoons over here, or on weekends, but now it's all game shows and reality TV.
