Okay, since Enterprise has unexpectedly grown on me, despite its many flaws, I decided to jump over my own shadow as the Germans would say and give the new version of BSG a chance. Well... two hours into it and i've regretted it already. Aside from the fact how it deconstructs much-loved characters from the original, admittedly a bit naive show, it is kong-winded and boring. The sets and uniforms are ugly, the cast horrible and none of tha characters have any redeeming qualities.

Some of the tech and the computer effects are mildls interesting, but that is about all the positive stuff I can say. I was never so bored during a so-called space battle (what battle?) before and I never cared less for the supposed heroes I was meant to identify with. Seriously, I am crossing my fingers for the Cylons, and the pilot isn't even over yet.

It's definitely it's own universe, with an entirely different heart and soul to the original. I don't mind it, much like I don't mind (very much) PJ's Tolkien-verse, but the most that can be said of either is that they were "inspired by" the originals. I don't think either really understood the heart and mind of original creater of each universe.

"Heart" is the exact thing that both interpretations lack.
The original BSG was all about family and camaraderie and sacrifice - eternal values that have become unfashionable and un öböl in the recent decades. Now it's all about treachery and blood and gore and sex, with no characterization and even less actual storytelling. And while the old maketts may be less streamlined and the special effects somewhat clumsy, they still look more real. Not to mention how beautiful the old sets and customs were. These new helmets are nothing but motorbike helms.

I did get used to seeing the show as completely separate after a while, or wildly AU fanfic at best, and then I could enjoy it as something which only happens to bear the same name by chance.

Unfortunately can't give you any hope for the characters getting any more likeable. If you're already rooting for the Cylons now you'll be waving pompoms by the end of season 1.

I heard there's a spin-off based on Caprica, which as I understand is more Cylon-centric? I might give that one a try eventually since I just can't stand the BSG humans.

I started to watch Caprica. I lasted about twenty minutes, I was so bored. It's all about how certain families came to power, IIRC.

Oh so it's not about the Cylons? Damn, that had sounded interesting to me.

I think one of them will turn our the one who created the Cylons or whatnot, but I simply didn't last long enough to find out. It's not the kind of sci-fi I like: too much politics. It could have been set in present time.

Which is my main complaint about the new series. The classic one was about mankind, the survival of humanity and all that. The new one seems way too American for me. The Colonial warriors are US Marines with motorbike helmets, everyone has an English-sounding name... It's a bit "Space - Above & Beyond", minus the amazing special effects and the strong characters. At least SAaB was honest about it being mostly American show. They called the Marines - Marines, and it was still a lot more sci-fi than new BSG.

Yeah, I read that new BSG was supposed to be a metaphor for the Iraq War and while I don't know if that's true, it's very easy to believe it is - and one laid on very thickly.
