You know I mentioned Enterprise plotbunnies, right? Well, they have taken over - at least where the world-building part is concerned. As if I needed more of them!

Anyway, I am thinking of an alternate pilot, loosely based on the original short story "The Shadow of Space" by Jose Farmer. I did't actually read the story, just a short summary of it, but I thought at once that it would have made a much better pilot episode than the canon one. So I decided to write it. Eventually. In the far, far future.

Background-wise, there will be changes, too. First and foremost, there own' be any classic era canon rape or Vulcan bashing. I'll stick to the 1960s canon and refuse JJ Abrams's visual fanfic. So, the Vulcans are still the honourable people of Mr Spock, and there won't be any early Borg or Ferengi encounters. Instead, I have created the Viseth, a highly advanced, beautiful, androgyneous humanoid specied that originate from Berengaria VIII and feel entitled to decide who is "ready" for interstellar exploration and who isn't. They often use Vulcan diplomats as mediators when dealing with what they call primitive species, often giving poor Vulcans a bad name as the result. They are not bad, per se, but they have their own agenda, and don't always worry about collateral damage.

I will keep the canon crew, as much as we saw of them in 4 years. I have, however, re-cast Captain Sockface. The CO of the first Warp 5 ship ought to be larger than life, with lots of charisma, and let's face it, Scott Bakula just doesn't bring it. So, in this AU Jonathan Archer will be played by John Barrowman, nicknamed "Jack" by his friends, like in the original script. And I re-cast the enigmatic Crewman Daniels, too, with Gareth David-Lloyd, for the sake of the character being, well, enigmatic. Which he wasn't at all in canon. And I added Lt Castello, an assistant engineer, and Dr Harper, a second doctor. Nurses will be coming, too.

But the most important addition will be the Viseeth liaison. She is referred to as a she because it is easier for humans that way and because she is so beautiful: dark-skinned, yet with white lines and patches covering her face and body, in a pattern that is as unique as a fingerprint. She is also a touch-telepath with no qualms about using her abilities, so she'll be lots of trouble for our heroes.

Okay, that's it so far. Any thoughts?

Sounds good. Scott Bakula was more like a social worker than a Starship Captain.

The man has about as much charisma as a table leg and as much personality as a shop window dummy.

Sounds wonderful. I can't wait to read some of this verse.

I am currently rewatching the pilot and reading the episode transcripts. Some of the latter is actually not so bad. The wooden acting and the bland, boring sets make the finished episode so much worse!

Sounds like a very interesting story! It'll be fun to see how all the different elements work together!

I am using the Viseeth to avoid the whole Klingon involvement. That way, the Viseeth and the Suliban will be the respective puppet masters behind the scenes.
