The answer is a firm and resounding NO! With the emphasis on HELL, NO! So it's not really surprising that I've picked up one, is it? I've started to look into steampunk because of references in various fandoms, and bam! I'm hooked. The visuals are really gorgeous. It's a good thing that they're practically impossible to describe properly, or else I'd already have started another giant writing project. Or two. Or three.

Sherlock would be amazing in such settings. Or Torchwood. Or a Dr Who story set on Pete's World, where they have at least airships. Good that the whole thing is way too complicated for me. I've got enough unfinished mammooth projects already.

For the record, I've watched the short films "Airlords of Airia" and "Arms Race" and a third one (I forgot the title) about two Victorian kids finding a giant squid spaceship (or whatnot) on the beach. It was fun.

Otherwise, I wrote a good chunk of Chapter 16 of "Kansas 2" today and a tiny bit of the first chapter of the Torchwoodgate sequel. Lots to type up for the next week.

On the less joyful news, the woman who's moved into the flat above ours a couple of years ago suddenly discovered that she doesn't like the cable of our satellite receiver running down the house wall next to her window. The dratted cable has been hanging there for the last 20 years; nobody ever protested. We did get the permit for it, of course. I hope she doesn't manage to make us remove it. I need my German fix - it's my way not to forget the language, and besides, why does it bother her so much? We never made any official complain when her stupid kid was playing video games above our heads on Saturdays and Sundays and during every holiday, so that we could "enjoy" the peng, peng effects for hours.

Some people really ought to be forcibly moved to lonely islands.

If she does make more of this, you could point out to anyone, who tires to make you remove it, that you didn't complain about the child, and she's never complained before

I'd just like to get this fixed peacefully, but my hopes aren't really high.

Steampunk is gorgeous! My friend J is a big fan, and actually makes some pieces in that style. For example, I have a lovely bookmark with cog wheels from watches sitting on my desk at work, waiting for the next book I need to read for a lecture course. :-)

That is really annoying about your neighbour complaining about the cable. It makes absolutely no sense; I could see that it would be something to want removed it was running across the window, but so long as it is beside it, what does it matter to her? When I moved into one of my flats in Uppsala, I had to go and tell the neighbour upstairs that the outdoor sensor for their window thermometer was hanging in front of my kitchen window. They apologized and pulled it up by about a metre and that was the end of the discussion. But that was the cable hanging in front of the window actually blocking my view!

Edited because I am rubbish at html-tags.

I guess she just likes to be contrary. Last time there was a broken water pipe behind the loo panel she didn't want to let the janitor in, either, even though all three flats below hers were at risk to be flooded.

re: steampunk videos
I haven't watched them all yet so the ones you mentioned might be included

Between that and cyberpunk? the future/present looks fascinating.

After 20 years _NOW_ she notices the cable?!?
I hope she doesn't get it removed either. She waited much too long to change things.
As for that 'lonely island'? Can I put my upstairs neighbor on it, please?
They have ...well, I'm guessing it's a treadmill but as it ran for over an hour recently, I can't be sure.
The "whump, whump, whump" is making me feel a bit unhealthy...the alternative is they have a washing machine - but that doesn't make any sense.

No, she just moved in a couple of years ago. We had the agreement with the previous inhabitants. I guess one of the recent strong winds loose de the cable fastening, that's how sie spotted it. Of course, she won't let the janitor in to fix it on her level.

If she had noticed it in the 1st few months, I'd sympathize with her. As it is, I'll still hope she doesn't get it removed.
Hold on to that permit and, if it looks like she will get rid of the cable, see that she comes up with a solution that'll recognize your right/your Permitted right to watch your programs.
Good luck!

It is not a written permit, unfortunately. Just a verbal agreement that has worked for twenty years fine enough.

I don't understand steampunk, I fear.

Your neighbour sounds a pain in the neck. Hope she calms down.

I never actually met her, but she appears to be a very unpleasant character indeed.

Steampunk can be a lot of fun. There's an awesome series of books by an author named Gail Carriger set in a steampunk Victorian-era England with werewolves and vampires as citizens. They're so much fun to read.

I'm really brand new to the whole genre, but I think Hoff would make a good planet for steampunk settings. See next entry.

I hope everything works out with your neighbor. She doesn't sound like a pleasant person to live near.

No, she doesn't. The worst part is: we haven't even met her yet. She didn't have the decency to come down one storey, ring the bell and tell us what her problem was. No, she went straight to the people responsible for the building, behind our back.
