One of Mum's oldest friends died yesterday. She was well beyond eighty and suffering from quickly spreading cancer, so it was probably the best for her that her weak heart let her go before the really bad pain would start. But she was part of my mother's life for some four decades - they worked together, and she even used to live just a few streets away from us, so they saw each other fairly often - and she leaves an empty space behind nobody else can fill.
She's the third of Mum's long-time friends to die in the last couple of years. It's understandable; they are all beyond eighty, and it is the order of things, I guess. But this old lady I'll also miss. She had a great sense of humour and faced everything life threw at her bravely. From that particular group, the former colleagues, she was the last one really close to Mum. There are younger people who still remember those times, but not from the same generation.
R.I.P, Mrs H, you were a good friend and an all around wonderful person.
Update: Thanks for the words of comfort, everyone. Mum bears the loss bravely; she commiserates with her remaining friends via phone, but otherwise she's as strong as usual. Those of you who've met her know what I mean. She's really a rock in a stormy sea.
