... but it appears to me that not only was Season 3 of Sherlock generally less captivating than the previous two; it also had a negative effect on the quality of fanfic.

The best authors on FF.Net, whose work I generally enjoy, are canon writers, like sevenpercent, to name just one - those who filled out the gaps in canon, creating backgrounds for the characters that are, frankly, much more interesting and captivating than the newly revealed canon version.

Now these authors suffer from having been Mofftissed. They struggle to somehow reconcile their own ideas with the mediocre crap that now counts as canon. It's a futile effort, of course, but they try, the poor things, cause they want to remain canon authors. As a result, their own writing has be come a lot less enjoy able (for me) because they must tone down their own creativity a great deal, which is a crying shame. They set their new stuff in previous seasons or adjust it to the new facts, even though they are hardly compatible.

People who write straight AUs have it easier, but many of those, too, see it necessary to adapt. I find that a shame, really... why lower one's own standards? I'm glad that at least englishtutor has't given up her own version of Mary.

I guess that makes sense. Fanfic writers need the interstices, the bits that are implied but never spelled out. Spelling everything out in canon destroys the fertile ground that can be used for fanfic.

Since fanfic comes from, naturally, fans, the feelings of these writers and their preferences need to be taken into account by the "canon" writers. And sometimes taking into account means not actually addressing, because that spoils the fun!

Yes, exactly! As I wrote in an earlier entry, the PTB let us wait for a very long time, and in this time a few excellent authors came up with such excellent ideas (sevenpercent, englishtutor, chappysmom, Tammany Tiger and others) that the actual canon outcome, two years later, pales in comparison.

I especially admired sevenpercent's Holmesian background. It's chilling, depressing, thoroughly researched, amazingly written and makes you undecided with whom you should actually side, as every main character (Sherlock, Mycroft, John and Lestrade) has their very good, justifiable reasons to act as they do, and both Holmes brothers are tragically broken and failed.

After this, seeing the mundane, boring Holmes parents in Series 3, plus Mycroft losing his aloof, mysterious and scary qualities, is a sore disappointment. As is the fact that sevenpercent, being a canon author by their own choice, tries to adapt to the mediocre canon now. :((
