Sherlock musings
Mar. 13th, 2014 12:33 pmJust a few thoughts about something that has been on my mind ever since I saw Series 3.
Feel free to discuss, argue, agree or disagree. *g*
As I said, generally it was a disappointment for me - and I know I'm not the only one. Their majesties the Mofftiss are so very sure that producing three film-length episodes in every two or so years ensures the high quality of the final product. Perhaps, from the POW of the creative mind, they are right. But I'm just a dumb fan who likes the characters and liked the plots of the first two series and how the characters interacted with each other, and frankly, I feel cheated.
For me (and from what I've read on the Net, not just for me), the disappointment is almost inevitable. We've waited for the new season so long - perhaps too long. Expectations were high - perhaps too high. It's not easy to catch lightning in a bottle twice, especially with such a relatively long time in-between. Plus, there were so many speculations about what really happened and what might happen in the future. Frankly, some of them are much better than what the Mofftiss have come up with.
I prefer Mary as written by Englishtutor on FF.Net to theirs. She's a lot more interesting and loveable. And no, I don't think that John would be exclusively drawn to psychopaths. Having him balancing a normal life with Sherlock'sdemands needs is much more interesting than canon!Mary's still completely mysterious (and nonetheless totally uninteresting) past. Besides, while I can buy that John considers her past a closed chapter, I can't buy that he would get over her shooting Sherlock. No matter what. Just no.
Also, Sherlock's parents in canon? Pathetic. I just cannot buy the idea of them producing not only one but two extraordinary geniuses. Unless Mycroft and Sherlock were test tube babies and their mother just the carrier. If you want to see excellent Holmes background, read sevenpercent's stuff on FF.Net - be prepared to be depressed by it, though. She's great, but her stuff is emotionally draining. Tammany Tiger also writes a great Mycroft, but she goes for the heartbreak, too.
I'll be modest and not point too obviously in the direction of my own stuff, no, Precioussss! *whistles innocently*
Summary: whether one likes the new season or not,I really don't think the Mofftiss did themselves a favour with leaving so much time between seasons. It allows us to grow fond of our own ideas, and makes us disappointed when the actual new season comes. Or, if they need the time to produce the new season, perhaps they shouldn't show the resulting three episodes within three weeks. They could have spread them across half a year, or a full year. That would give us time to adapt, and we'd know what direction things might go in the future.
Just my two Eurocents.
Oh, and I still hate the idea of Moriarty coming back!
