Erm yes... Mum and I decided to put the first rain-free day in weeks to good use and visited the Budapest Zoo. We haven't been there for ages and both enjoyed our visit very much, despite that the weather decided to switch to very warm, all of a sudden.

There were to be seen: a baby elephant named Asha playing in the mud, 4 baby lions sleeping in an insufferably cute heap, a baby giraffe trying to imitate the grown-ups, a baby gorilla looking very earnestly out of its head, quite adult orang-utans mimicking homeless people while lying on a heap of rags among plastic bins and looking mournfully at the visitors, an elephant bull showing his tricks (and his most private parts, although that probably wasn't part of the program), mercats watching their homes, Madagascar baby lemurs travelling on the back of their mum as if she was a sightseeing bus, while the older kids from the previous year were boxing...

All in all, it was a delightful early afternoon. We even ate chimney cake, although it was very expensive. But very good, too.

We even felt a bit guilty for having such a good time while flood victims are being evacuated and going to lose so much. But it's so rare that we can do something like this. I'll have to spend some money for charity to calm down my guilty conscience.

Insulin, Nurse! Stat!

Sounds like a marvelous afternoon! I'm glad the two of you could get out to enjoy it. We took Mac to a green space along the river -- our usual weekend walk was blocked off for an event -- and enjoyed being out on grass and clover for a bit.

As for guilt, your enjoyment does not in any way disrespect what others are suffering. Staying home and feeling awful does nothing to help them, while a trip to the zoo together renews you and Mum, which makes it possible for both of you to continue to make your own contributions to the world.

We enjoyed our visit a gret deal, despite everything. We haven't been to the zoo for a decade or so and I'm glad I forced the issue.

I think I need to introduce you to a favorite web site: Zooborns (http://www.zooborns.com/)

I mean who isn't a sucker for baby animals! Don't have a guilty conscience. You're supporting the Zoo by going there, and the work that good Zoos do nowadays in helping endangered animal species survive is important too.

Thanks for the link. It's a wonderful site. The twin loris are particularly adorable.

How would your not having a good time help the flood victims? I understand the impulse (everyone, including me, feels it sometimes), but it's irrational. Enjoy the good times when you can, because the bad ones are always lurking just around the corner.

What is chimney cake? That's one I've not heard of before.

This: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%BCrt%C5%91skal%C3%A1cs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%BCrt%C5%91skal%C3%A1cs) is chimney cake.

Next time you visit Budapest, come during pre-Christmas time. Not only is our Christmas market the best I've seen so far, the food is delicious, too. Including chimney cake.

Not quite yet, but it's getting harder to resist!
