I've finally caved in and switched to S2 style on LJ, in the hope that I can get back the drop-down list of icons when I post a comment. It works on [livejournal.com profile] gaheris_lives, which has the same theme and layout. It still doesn't work on my own journal. Anyone has an idea what to do? This display all possible icons in now particular order when I'm trying to choose one for the comment drives me crazy.

I think you might need to go to Profile>Settings>Display & set everything to view in my own style, ie tick both:

Other Journals: View all journals and communities in my own style
Comment Pages: View comment pages from my Friends page in my own style

If that doesn't work, try using the style Component -- that's what I use and it definitely is compatible.

It worked!

Thank you so much! Even the subject line is back, yay! I don't mind hand-coding the one or other word if it spares me all the bother with the icons.

I liked the old style better, to be honest, but we all have to make compromises for the sake of practicality.

On the other hand, I might have to return to the old style, as the new one won't allow the expanding of all collapsed threads at once, and half the comments (or even entries) show up blank on my old browser. *sighs*

Bother! And I was so happy!

Aie! I don't think you're going to get both expand all collapsed comments & icon dropdowns from the same style. But the browser thing is very annoying. I ended up having to buy a (secondhand) laptop because my decade-old one couldn't handle Mozilla bloat, and sites like LJ & AO3 don't display correctly in slimmed-down browsers.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Why have multiple advantages at the same style when you can have various annoyances, right?

I hate Mozilla. It slows down my old PC like whoa, because my processor is geriatric, too, and it can't handle the new Norton, either. Sooner or later I'll need a new PC, I'm afraid. Or at least a new processor. *sighs*

If you can afford it, it might be least hassle getting a new computer. Or newer -- my 'new' laptop is seven years old and works like a dream. We bought it reconditioned on e-Bay, and it wasn't particularly expensive.
