I've overstrained my left leg a week ago, while baking with the kids. Now it aches in certain angles (fortunately not in all) where the tigh bone joins the hipbone. Strangely enough, bucking and sitting cross-legged are the most painful positures, which is a bother, as I do sit cross-legged a lot. Well, usually. *sighs*

It promises to be a long process. *sighs some more*

And since pain always makes me grumpy, I'm considerin another re-vamping of my flist. Having my friends page covered with huge entries and large pictures that make the page an eternity to load are no fun, either.

When did I start turning into this unpleasant old hag who always has something to complain about? *sighs a third time*

Hope you feel better soon! I can't sit cross-legged any more either, it hurts my hips.

Have you thought about creating a secondary friends list, which you only read when you have time/good connection? Mine has been split for years -- I use default (close friends, which I read whenever I am on LJ), other friends (which I read when I have time and don't worry if I don't always get to the bottom or have time to comment), communities/newsletters (which these days I never get around to reading at all, but having them friended means I don't lose them if I fancy a fix of whatever type of fiction).

How can I do that? Creating a secondary friends list, I mean? I haven't even managed to create filters on my own, I'm that stupid when it comes to web skills. Can you probably guide me through the process?

Go to your profile page while logged in, and select Other Friends Tools from the Friends dropdown. Under the header Sort and Filter Friends, click on Custom Friends Groups. I think LJ initially suggests some friends groups for your (eg family) and it's probably easiest just to rename one of these using the Rename button. Once you've got a subgroup named, just add people from your full list to it by clicking the double arrows between Not in group and In group. When you are done, you need to press Save button to save.

Then go back to the Other Friends Tools page and click this time on Filter your friends page. There you can tick boxes for all the subgroups you want included in your default friends reading page.

What I did was make a group called Default (set to default), and a group called Extended which I link to in my links list. That way you can access the longer list without having to faff around ticking and unticking groups all the time.

Hope this makes sense -- I set mine up years ago now, and I think LJ has made the interface slightly different since then.

It's definitely different. I haven't seen any Default group, but perhaps I just looked in the wrong place. Although LJ tends to change things at a whim all the time, which I find really annoying.

I hope you feel better soon too! The cold weather doesn't help. With me it's my hands; my mother had arthritis and it's starting, though still very minor, for some reason noticeable mainly at night when I'm trying to sleep :(

I was also going to suggest using the default option to filter your list. I've been doing it a while as well--really cuts down on the drama and the endless scrolling.

The cold is less of a problem, actually. More the fact that I have to spend hours standing around on the school yard, trying to keep the ugly little trolls adorable schoolkids from throtting each other over such important matters as who may have the ball first or something like that. Plus, in most school rooms there are very uncomfortable chairs for the teacher; I'm a short person, with short legs, which cannot fully be placed on the floor when sitting on them, and therefore I strain the already strained muscles or sinews even more.

Can you lobby for more suitable chairs? In the UK I suspect you would have a legal right to a more appropriate chair, though it's difficult when several people with different leg lengths all need to use the same chair.

I do have an old, rickety, very comfortable chair in my own classroom. Unfortunately, I spend the major part of my worktime in different rooms.

*hugs* Even though these things take time, I'm going to hope anyway that you'll recover quickly.

So do I. I'm clumsy enough, even without being handicapped by a ruined hip. *sighs*

Getting old isn't much fun, but I suppose it beats the alternative.

Here's hoping your hip is better soon!

Yeah, better being an old hag than a young, good-looking corpse. *g*
