I was in Vienna yesterday - school trip with the eight-grade German class. Granted, I came home half-dead, but it was a fantastic trip nonetheless. We had beautiful weather - cool, but with brilliant sunshine and little to no wind - and Vienna in its pre-Christmas glory is a sight to behold. All larger streets are decorated and illuminated, a great number of small Christmas markets can be found in all popular places: in parks, in front of churches, etc.

Of course, we went to THE Christmas market, in front of the City Hall, and while it is always amazing, I found this year it was even more so. I really have no words to describe it: you'll have to see it for yourself to even imagine what it's like.

Some of the trams - not all, of course - have been redecorated as Christmas trains, with Santas driving them and angels waving from each wagon, there's Christmas music on the streets and spiced, mulled wine at every second corner, and small, iron ovens where potatoes and maronis are grilled, and almonds and hazelnuts iced in sugar and caramel and cinnamon, and the scent of the whole thing is beyond imagination.

Oh, and my baking progress (check pinned entry above) has reached 16 different sorts. Go me!

It sounds wonderful! What a way to get into the holiday spirit. It must be a treat for the kids too. How long is the trip from where you are?

It takes about 3 hours by train and 4 hours by coach, due to the necessary pauses on the way. I prefer the train, where I can stand up and walk a bit during the travel, but by coach it isn't too unpleasant, either.

I think the kids liked it a lot. They had fun, could try the alcohol-free Kinderpunch, which seemed such a grown-up thing for them, ate themselves into a sizeable belly-ache, I think, and they were still in high spirits during the 4-hour-journey back, so I think we can call it a success.

That sounds just lovely. In Chicago they have a Santa elevated train with rides for the kids, and just a few buses they decorate. I got out of work one cold evening in not the best mood and got on the Santa bus. Holiday songs playing, the bus driver singing, buy the time I got home I had a big stupid grin on my face!

And I didn't comment on your baking - wow! I can bake, buy you are the Queen of baking! I think I've gained a couple of pounds just reading those posts, LOL!

Oh, no, reading won't make you put on weight! That's the advantage of virtual cookies. Baking is my way to relax, even if I'm deadly tired afterwards it makes me so happy when the cookies turn out well.

Besides, it makes the problem of Christmas presents easily solved. Everyone get a big heap of cookies, all different sorts, on a nice, Christmass-y paper plate, prettily wrapped, and they're happy. They don't have to bake themselves and won't have to look at some stupid present they don't like collect dust on a hidden shelf.

Sounds wonderful! Is deeply envious! What are maronis, by the way?

Sorry. Maronis are sweet chestnuts. I've just replied something to Artemis in German and mixed up the languages.

If you think the Christmas Market in Budapest was great, multiplicate it with 100 and you'll perhaps come close to the main one in Vienna. It's indescribable.

I wondered if that might be it -- marrons in French, as I recall. And yes the Budapest Christmas market was memorable -- I simply can't imagine something 100x the size!

I must say that the Christmas market in Budapest is worth seeing, too. We don't have such a huge space for it, or so much pomp, but I find that the wares offered on our fair are much better.

You're trying to tempt me back! Alas, I won't be going to either Vienna or Budapest for Christmas for a while. for some reason, I always seem to be scheduled for call around the Christmas holidays. Blech!

It's amazing, simply amazing. I mean, Budapest at pre-Christmas time is absolutely lovely, too, but you can't outdo the Austrians in these things. It's simply not possible.
