... about the news coming from the UK. Mum's getting really anxious, about just how safe the whole trip is going to be, and whether half the programme will be cancelled or not. :(

I hope it will go well. We've wanted to make this particular trip for several years by now - it would be a shame to have chosen the wrong time.

Okay, I know it sounds terribly selfish, the ones with the actual problem are the British people themselves, but I've so been looking forward to this trip - and the news do make me a bit nervous.

Looking at your itinerary, it would seem that most of it is in the countryside or small towns - the bits that might be a problem are Liverpool and London, although everything might have calmed down by then (London is apparently mostly calm so far tonight). Most of the problems have been in the centres of big cities and late afternoon into the night.

I hope it works out and that you enjoy the trip.

I could live with missing out Liverpool, honestly. That wasn't the part that wanted me to go on this trip. But I was hoping to meet some of the folks from Cambridge in London, or if I couldn't, to go and explore a bit with Mum - she absolutely wants to go to Harrod's again - so that would be a shame, really. She loves London, and we haven't been there for, oh, I don't know, perhaps ten years or so.

At least London is near the end of your trip so there is plenty of time for things to calm down - I doubt things will last that long, as with the Olympics next year the Government can't be seen to allow it - they are already talking about using rubber bullets.

It doesn't sound selfish at all to me; of course you'd be worried about your long-planned trip being ruined! You want your mother to have a good time, not be stressed out.

From what I've seen on the news, the trouble spots have been in economically-depressed areas of the larger cities, not in places where tourists are likely to go. I suspect you'll be fine. Here's hoping that by the time you and your mother leave, things will have completely quieted down!

Let's hope it stays soo... I'm sooo looking forward to see Chester, after having read of it in passim in the Cadfael stories. :)

Chester is a beautiful City. You must see the cathedral.I could just imagine Brother Cadfael walking there.

The cathedral is on the programme all right.

It's a funny thing; Earl Ranulf of Chester is portrayed in the books as a somewhat shady character with his shifting loyalties, never actually makes an appearance, and I'm still exctied about getting to see his city. It still means walking on Cadfael's paths.

The trouble has been in inner city areas, starting late afternoon/early evening, going on late into the night. London was quiet last night. I think you'll be fine.

Your word in God's ear. They're planning a group walk around Piccadilly Cricus in the evening on the last Saturday, but since we didn't plan to join it - Mum's likely be too tired on the 9th day anyway - we'll simply have to figure out how to return to our hotel earlier. We're going to have a one-day ticket, so it ought to work.

Thanks, my friend. It's good to hear about you again, BTW. I haven't been around the Marcus/Neroon list for a while (too preoccupied with other fandoms), but I know you had a hard period. Hope you're doing better in the meantime.

The riots really seem to have quieted down, at least here in London. Fingers crossed they will stop in the rest of the country soon as well. As mentioned by others above, I don't think they should affect you anywhere but London and Liverpool.

By the way, I am in London on the Saturday 20th if you have time in your itinerary for meeting up. I will send you a PM with contact details.
