A couple of DVDs from Series One were on extreme sale in our local supermarket, so I bought them, because of Clive Standen who apparently plays a part in the series. Of course, I didn't realize that he only plays in 3 episodes around the end of Series Three. Stupid me. Nonetheless, I liked what I've seen so far. Sure, it's not a historical drama, but I never expected it to be. It's nice entertainment, nothing less, nothing more - but sometimes that's all you need.

And I like Much very much. Pardon the pun.

I wouldn't put my hopes high where the script is considered. See what he's done with LOTR!

Although I'm curious how they will work Legolas into the concept. Perhaps they'll eject Thranduil completely and replace him with his son? It might work with the fanpoodles, although Orlando Bloom isn't as young and delicious as he might have been once (I prefer the more mature version myself, but I'm clearly not the kind of viewer any of these films are aiming at).

If PJ really ejects Thranduil, even if it makes sense where the illiterate masses are concerned, I'll never forgive him. The Elvenking was my first love, and I'll be eternally insulted on his behalf. *g*

Oh, god, I hadn't even thought of that. (But then who thought of the horse kissing?) But Thranduil's the baddy, they can't replace him with Legolas, can they? I wouldn't object much to Bilbo & Legolas meeting, particularly if Legolas were to help with the Dwarven escape. And he could entirely reasonably fight in the Battle of the Five Armies.

You're right, of course - Leggy-poo can't be the baddie. In that case, I'm deadly afraid of the casting choice for Thranduil. As a rule, Elves were terribly miscast in the theory. I could have lived with Orlando Bloom, had they not put a blond wig on his head, which looked particularly weird with his dark eyebrows, and the blue contacts were creepy - he looked like a glass-eyed shop window puppet.

I saw some of the Dwarves on YouTube, but not all. I'll try to hunt down some more spoilers - I'm really, really interested in the casting choices.

I wonder if Hugo Weaving will return to play Elrond - that would be really weird. Ugly!Elrond was bad enough, but ugly and old Elrond would be even weirder - and the actor hasn't gotten any younger in the last decade or so.

Wikipedia had a long list of confirmed cast, some of whom look very promising. They're rumouring David Tennant for Thranduil but I don't know how reliable that is.

Oh, dear! Tennant as Thranduil sounds absolutely dreadful. Poor Elvenking not only is he going to be the baddie, he's apparently going to be a bouncing idiot, too.

Thanks for the link, though. I'm going to take a look.

I have seen Tennant doing something other than the gurning Doctor, but he does need strong reining in, I think, and I don't know whether Jackson's capable of that. Jackson tended to get quite one-note performances from the less-experienced actors.

Yeah, even some of the more experienced one delivered rubbish. I hated Weaving's performance as Elrond. I'm willing to cut him some slack, considering how badly the part was written, but he could have done a much better job, IMO. Look what Sean Bean or Ian Holm have done!

The idea of Tennant haunting Mirkwood like a pointy-eyed clown makes me shiver with fear.
