I'm having great fun with picowrimo, and I'm very grateful that altariel encouraged me to join. The people there are funny and inspiring, and I made considerable headway with my "Toshiko in 12th century Japan" story.

Also, I got a wonderful postcard from ithilwen, from the Grand Canyon. It's so very nice of her!

All in all: autumn break is a noble thing.

Yep, it's a very nice place to be. I don't think I'd have been able to write this much of the Tosh story without the inspiration getting there. I could never do NaNo - it's just too much stress that I can't handle, together with he job-related one. But Pico sets goals that I can actually achieve, and that's a good feeling.

How are your vampires and werewolves doing? Don't hesitate to call on me if you want to brainstrom a little. You've babysit my stuff often enough, I'd be glad to return the favour.

Thank you for the brainstorming offer, I'll definitely use it once I actually have something to brainstorm about *miserable groan* I have only one scene left, then I'll be flying blind. And it's not a scene to look forward to because it's all fighting and smut, both of which are "struggle for every word" territory for me. Which I had just overcome after the first two and a half days of writing being pure torture, so I'm not eager to go back to it.

Fighting is not easy. *nodnod*
I always struggle with that, mostly because I haven't got a clue how it goes, not even in my own language. I usually use some literary excerpt as a template to build up the fight.

That's a good idea. I don't think I have books with well-written werewolf/vampire fight scenes to take inspiration from, but I might look for clips on Youtube. The fight scene in the opening was easy because it was from Beth's POV and her mind is an odd (though fun) place to be, full of metaphors and jumps in time. So I could just stay very vague (though this meant the fight was over in a few hundred words) and then knock her out. But this is one I'll actually have to show from start to finish in David's POV, who is a lot saner and aware of his surroundings (though clueless about what is really going on.)

The freshly beta-ed 3rd chapter is up to otherworlds_lib, whenever you have a week to dig yourself through a 12th century Japanese naval battle. ;)

Cool! I'm looking forward to reading it already. I think I'll get around to reading (and reviewing) this weekend, but I know I'm too tired now to process anything as complex as a 12th century naval battle. I'll get hopelessly confused *laughs*

And now I'll have to hunt down some good templates for a vicious swordfight between two Immortals... *sighs*

That's why writing historical fiction is a place I don't even dare to go.

Yeah, but it's also great fun, trying to squeeze your story into the given frame and use all the cool toys that are already there. ;)
