Flood news and other stuff
Jun. 5th, 2010 07:45 pmThe dams have broken on several places again. More people lost their homes. I feel almost guilty for sitting here in safety, planning my holidays. The Danube is more than a metre higher than usually, all quays are under water now and closed for traffic. It's just a week ago that Mum and I were on a sightseeing cruise with one of the school classes... things can change really fast. They say the peek of the flood will reach Budapest somewhen in the middle of the next week.
Speaking of holidays; Mum and I were to the Great Market Hall of Budapest, to buy a few souvenirs for our trip to Romania. She wants to bring little prezzies for her old schoolmates; they're having a school reunion.
the_wild_iris, if you indeed manage to come over in the summer, I'll just have to take you there. I think you'll enjoy it greatly. Granted, there's a lot of kitch, like at all tourist joints, but also a great many of beautiful, beautiful things, like wood-carvings, embroidery, china and all other stuff, very specifically Hungarian.
Also, I might be able to meet
lissas_elves in Vienna, in early August. Mum didn't need much persuasion to make a three-day-trip or so, assuming she'll be strong and healthy enough for it. Until then, we'll have had time to recover from our actual holidays in Switzerland (8 days by bus!), and perhaps she can meet her old buddies in Vienna, while Lissa and I hang out.

Date: 2010-06-05 09:47 pm (UTC)Yay!! I hope you'll both feel up to making the trip. We've never been to Vienna, so it'd be great if you could show us around the city a bit. And perhaps we can find time to talk a little Tolkien... ;-)

Oh dear! And it's not only the Danube that's causing trouble, is it? We saw pictures of some of the flooded houses. Guess this situation is going to occur ever more frequently with the rising water levels. :-(

Date: 2010-06-06 08:54 am (UTC)We had lots of stormy rain this spring. But the floods come back each year, no matter what.

Date: 2010-06-06 04:32 am (UTC)The market hall is lovely. Thanks for sharing the photo.
Do have fun on all your travels! It's good Mum has such a keen sense of adventure: she'll live to be 100 at this rate!

Date: 2010-06-06 08:57 am (UTC)I'll try to find some photos about the interior of the Market Hall for you. It's really beautiful.
Yeah, Mum's quite the adventurer. More than myself, to be honest. As for live to be 100 - I certainly hope so. Grandma managed to 96, and had she not fallen and broken her leg, she'd certainly have lived to be 100.

Date: 2010-06-06 10:47 am (UTC)Yeah, the flood *is* horrible. We're very fortunate with where we live, but a lot of other people are not.
Another two weeks till summer holidays. I hope very much that the two of us will manage to get together one day, too. We've got so many shared fandoms, it should be a lot of fun!

Date: 2010-06-06 12:48 pm (UTC)I dunno if I'll get around to reading it today since I keep getting interrupted every time I start to read, but it's nice to have several chapters at hand to read in one rush when you have the time for uninterrupted reading.
Gah, sometimes I feel like I have less time on weekends than on weekdays! Of course, I know better but I still come up with unreasonably huge to-do lists every weekend and then I'm disappointed that I don't even manage half of it... Stupid, I know, but I just don't learn!
Yes, meeting would definitely be awesome! Torchwood marathons (with plenty of Gwen-bashing), SGA or Andromeda marathons, talking about fics and baking... We would... no, we WILL have a lot of fun! *grins*

Date: 2010-06-06 04:56 pm (UTC)You know, the only times even more stressful than weekends are summer holidays. The to-do-lists for weekends are nothing compared with those for summer holidays. *sighs*
Now, retirement, that would be the thing! If I consider that the much-criticized socialist system would have let me retire at the age of 55 (=next year), and instead I'll have to work seven(!!!) more years, I could break down in tears...

Date: 2010-06-06 10:50 am (UTC)She spoke from one of her old classmates yesterday evening - ain't phone a great thing? - with whom we're gonna stay, and we'll buy the train tickets tomorrow. She's very excited about it.
