Back from Vienna
Oct. 25th, 2008 10:41 pmIt was nice, it was relaxing - despite the running to and fro, just for the heck of it - and we managed to spend an indecent amount of cash on relatively unnecessary things. Yay!
Basically, we bought various sorts of Xmas sweets (yep, already everywhere in the city; not yet over here, thank God!), mostly Spekulatius and Zimtsterne, the things you can't get in Hungary. Three different sorts of Spekultius: one spicy sort, one with chocolate and one that was called butter-and-almond... Gah, I could have bought literally mountains of them, I like the dratted things so much. Alas, I must think of my girlish shape (you know, the one I haven't had for the last, oh, forty or so years).
We decided against buying Dominosteine, as they contain marzipan, which neither of us likes. At least something. Wait, we don't like anything with coconuts in it, either. Or hazelnuts. So, that's at least something, eh? OTOH, we had original Wiener Sachertorte with our coffee on the second day, so...
I also bought lots of DVDs. Starting with such evergreen sci-fi classics as Silent Running (oh, the music of it!) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (bestest visuals in the history of sci-fi, I tell you!)to the new, partially German version of Dune (which I, personally, prefer to the David Lynch version, mostly perhaps because I can't stand Kyle McLachlan, and some other casting choices were also bad, IMO) and the new Stargate: Continuum movie, which I, surprisingly, found quite enjoyable. Surprising because of what Stargate - SG1 has come in Seasons 9 and 10, I mean.
I also decided to buy the LOTR DVDs (the extended editions), mostly because I wanted to be able to listen to the original voices of the actors (even though I don't like many of them) and the extra materials.
And I finally bought "Blood and Chocolate". Looking forward to that one.
Ironically, "Beowulf and Grendel", the movie I've been hunting for all the time, and which the lovely Dís finally found for me, could have been bought in Vienna by the dozens. Ah, well, life is weird.
The day before our departure I also brought an outrageously expensive book: The History of the Hobbit by JRRT, by John D. Rateliff. It's interesting, what I've seen of it so far. Spending money unnecessarily always helps with frustration. Too bad you can't always use the method, eh?

Date: 2008-10-25 10:01 pm (UTC)All the chocolate and stuff sounds deliciously unhealthy. Will you be able to save it for Christmas, do you think?
The LOTR EE DVD are much better than the original movie and the very best is all the extra stuff about the actors - lots of great moments there. YAY!
I haven't even watched the old version of Dune. Hmm. Ought to buy it - the books are among my all time favourites. As soon as I've finished the Mary Renault books, I'll get hold of it.

Date: 2008-10-26 02:40 pm (UTC)Deliciously unhealthy indeed - sometimes a girl just has to have them, right? Since we bought other sweets as well, we'll be able to keep Spekulatius and Zimtsterne until Christmas, I think. Vienna is the best place for sweets, I swear. Should we manage to meet there one day, I'll introduce you to the most delicious and most unhealthy stuff. After all, what other pleasure do we get at our age? *g*
The old version of Dune is... interesting, but many of the characters are miscast, IMO. Of course, I think the same about LOTR, and people want to lynch me for it, but that's my story, and I'm sticking with it!
The new version does have its weeknesses, too - for example, the Reverend Mother of the Bene Gesserit is ruefully ridiculous - but I still find it better. A fellow sci-fi geek over here thinks I'm an heretic, but, well, tastes are different, aren't they?

Date: 2008-10-29 09:27 am (UTC)But Vienna keeps being a wonder indeed. So, drop me a note when you visit next time, and we might arrange a shared conquest. *g*
