Stockholm picspam, Part 1
Aug. 10th, 2008 10:49 pmI still owe you guys the best pics from my French trip from the previous year, so I'll just post a few samples of my Stockholm pics now. When the French pics are posted and I still have room left in my ScrapBook, I'll add more.
So, on Day One all we did was to take a walk in the Gamla Stan (sp?), the old town centre, as we arrived after 4 pm. I just run around and took photos randomly, because there were beautiful sights on every side.
disthrainsdotte has probably more idea what these pretty buildings are - the guide told us, of course, but I managed to lose my count after two dozen or so. ;))

So, Dís my dearest, what have I seen? I know there was the Central Station and the Opera House, but other than that? *ducks in shame*

Date: 2008-08-11 06:51 pm (UTC)#1 is the entrance to the hotel where you lived.
#2 is a statue near the entrance to the City Library.
#3 is The Royal Guarden (Kungsträdgården) where the kings of old grew part of the food eaten in the Castle.
#4 is the Opera House on its back side where there is a restaurant (Operakällaren).
#5 is a view of the Parlament Building. The glass windows to the right is where the parlament members gather.
#6 is the most narrow alley in the Gamla Stan, it is not even a meter wide and you can only go there on foot or by bike.
#7 is of the statue of Karl XIV Johan, the ancestor of our present King. It shows the king leading his armies to war, but his son Oscar had it turned so he was shown riding into the city. So it stood until it was turn in the direction that was intended originally.
#8 is the memorial to Engelbrekt, who led an uprising against evil tax collectors.
Looks like you had a lot to do that first day. I look forward to more pics.

Date: 2008-08-11 07:36 pm (UTC)I remember the narrow alley now. We were joking with Mum that I shouldn't go in because I might not get out again. *g*

Date: 2008-08-11 09:05 pm (UTC)Operakällaren - even I have heard of that restaurant! It's often mentioned in books (plenty of wonderful Swedish crime novels these days).
Looking at Engelbrekt, I must say his uprising seems to have been rather unsuccesful in the long run.

Date: 2008-08-12 04:15 pm (UTC)The alley isn´t that narrow but it is not a place to take a car, that´s for sure. It is a reminder that in the old days alleys were narrow. Most people walked while those who could rode or went in coaches.
