On the next day, Mum and I decided to pass on the incredible Skocjan Caves - me because I'm severely agoraphobic and couldn't have made it through the two-kilometres-trip, Mum because she was still very exhausted fromt he previous day. Afterwards the others told us that we'd been very wise, for the paths were extremely steep. Other than us, three colleagues chose not to go in, so we had a nice chat and walked around a bit in the entrance area.

Below are some pics from the surroundings. Also, my colleagues donated a few beautiful pics from the inside, just so that you wouldn't be deprived of the underground beauty. Unlike Postojna, Skocjan is more renowned for its underground rivers and the so-called murmuring caves. The colleagues say that the hundred-metres-deep caverns (where they were standing on narrow walkways on the rock walls about in the middle) with the steaming waters below were a sight beyond description. I'm a bit sorry I couldn't see them, but going in was just beyond my abilities.

Enjoy the picspam behind the tag anyway!

The dwellers of the caves:

The so-called saucer pans. During rainfall, this is where the water flows down the caves (among other places):

Impressive limestone formations:

It's a huge place...

Very huge...

I mean really, *really* huge...

With lacework a ceiling...

...and weird rocks:

...and an outlook to die for:

Perhaps. Although, as I've said repeatedly, fantasy and reality are two very different pairs of boots. Such a karst cave is wet and cold, and while it's beautiful, it isn't exactly ideal for living in it. Not even Dwarves who're a hardy folk, as we all know. *g*

Those pictures are amazing. I'd love to visit those caves someday. They remind me of the Mammoth Caves in upper-state New York which I plan to visit some day.
