I need to go to Vienna. I need it on a level that's almost physical. That city has something magical, just being there makes me feel twenty years younger. It's so much like home - the two places were built as the twin capitals of the good old Monarchy, after all - and yet everything seems easier, friendlier, more... cultured there.

Of course, the fact that their local problems don't really concern me on a personal level does add to the feeling of easines. But beyond that, it's still the source of good sci-fi DVDs, even though a lot less so than earlier. Still a hundred per cent more to get there than back here.

Thank God spring break will come relatively early this year. I'm ready to go on the first available day.

Oh, I can so understand you!! I visited Vienna 3 years ago - mostly because my sister asked me to accompany her on her vacation. I didn't have any special expectations... I was not prepared at all for the effect this city had on me!! I still dream about it... I have to go back in the not so distant future. (But I promised myself London first, because I haven't been there for much longer, and I want to see some things I missed last time)

I liked London, too, for many different reasons (one of them being the incredible offer of sci-fi material), but Vienna has something magical.

Perhaps one day we can meet there. It's not exactly halfways between you and me, but definitely closer than one of us doing all the travelling, eh?

That would be great!! Where do you stay in Vienna usually? It's 1 hour flight from Cologne, so I can be there rather quickly ;-)

In a very simple little pension near Wien Mitte Railway Station. The accommodations are not fancy, but it lies central and is fairly cheap - in Austrian measures. And what else does one need than a bed, a shower and occasionally a bit of TV when abroad? You're out roaming the city anyway, right?

I'll send you name and address of the pension if you want it. We always stay there, Mum and I.

I'm glad you'll have a chance to get away to Vienna sooner rather than later! Sometimes one's soul needs the spirtual recharge it gets from visiting a beloved place.

Indeed. And Vienna can do just that. Even a one-day trip can make me go on for a long time.

Vienna's still like an unimaginable dream to me. Actually, so is Budapest. My friend has told me several times that it's a beautiful city. *sigh* I can't wait until I have a job again.

Yeah, pesky finances, ruining our lives. It's so not fair.

I'm happy for you that you'll get to visit Vienna soon!

Who is the handsome guy from your icon? It seems to me like I should know his name, but I just can't figure out who he is.

You mean Buliwyf from "The 13th Warrior", aka Vladimir Kulich, or my standard icon?

Ah, he's from 13th Warrior! Then it makes sense that I recognise him, I watched that movie a couple of times.

Ah yes, time in a beloved place is always good for the soul. I think I'm due for some time back in the Pacific Northwest.

Or else it's time to get a dog again. Hard to say which does my soul more good...

When I come to visit, I look forward to seeing Vienna through your eyes!
