Watched the movie today - well, sporadically - on German TV. Gah, was it bad. Worse than bad, actually: stupid and boring. A stupid plot,low-budget monsters, characters completely without redeeming qualities and bad acting. I didn't even recognize David Wenham, although since I can't stand him anyway, it's probably no great loss.

I like vampire movies (and series). So I was doubly disappointed.

OTOH, today's CSI episode was a surprisingly good one. The bad guy was played by William whatshisname, I always forget - the same one who was the Section 31 agent in DS9. Interesting villains should always be played by good actors.

Oh, and BTW, my satellite receiver died on me. Again. When even your distractions abandon you, it's really major suckage. As if RL wouldn't suck enough already.

I didn't like VH either, despite a great fondness for vampire moves/books/fics.
I do hope your reception problem is only an interruption and not terminal!

The mechanic actually managed to repair it... for the time being. Will switch to digital receiver, soon, though. Even if it's not exactly cheap.

Sorry to hear about the receiver. That's like having one's chocolate go bad: something that simply should not be allowed to happen in the universe. Must speak to TPTB about this...

Van Helsing was kind of a mismatched, uneven film. I liked parts of it but overall it wasn't that great. The ballroom/masquerade scene was beautifully done and the reveal in the mirror was great. Although of all the various vampire "lore" that exists, I always thought the one about having no reflection was the most ridiculous. They don't have souls but neither do inanimate objects and they still cast reflections. I remember seeing some review of Underworld where the reviewer complained that the vampires shouldn't be able to see themselves in the mirrors apparently forgetting that there are many different versions of vampire abilities. Old folklore says they can't cross running water but you never see that in any movie.

I also liked the scene at the end where werewolf Gabriel holds Anna's dead body in his arms and shifts back while framed by the full moon. And seeing Hugh Jackman near-naked wasn't half-bad either;) But it could have been so much better with a more coherent, streamlined plot.

To be honest, I watched the movie like someone reads a boring book: every tenth page or so. I kept switching to other channels whenever I couldn't bear it anymore. Especially when the anorexic female lead appeared - she made me scratch myself bloody with sheer irritation.

So, you assume the move had a plot? Hmmm, I must have missed that. Alas, Hugh Jackman doesn't do a thing for me, half-naked or otherwise.
