wiseheart: (13th warrior)

I've watched "The 13th Warrior" on German TV again. It's the third or fourth time, not counting those when I watched it on DVD, in English original. Still loving the film to pieces. Yes, I know it's full of inaccuracies, the whole concept is standing on clay feet, and so on. Yes, I know that it isn't considered a very good movie. I still love it and watch it every time it's shown on TV. I wish I could get my hands on a version where all those little scenes with the Vikings that got cut out have been reinserted. But, I guess, one can't have everything.

I assume I'll have the same relationship to "Kingdom of Heaven". I love that movie, too, love Orlando's acting, and don't care if it's historically inaccurate. Or if it has gaping plot holes. I just don't care.

I'm going to watch "First Knight" on German TV tonight. Have already seen once, but Sean Connery is just too good to miss. I'm seriously unhappy about Richard Gere being cast as Lancelot, though. Granted, I've never liked him, for me he's one of the most unattractive men on the silver screen, but even if he weren't, he's *boring*. No woman in her right mind would give up Sean Connery for *him*. Especially not an older Sean Connery who's ten times more appealing than he'd been in his youth.

I don't care either, there are films I love others hate. I just enjoy them for what they bring to me.

Not by me, I could never understand why Ginevra would give up her king for that loser, either. But then, I also never understood why Artus, in this movie, threatened to burn Ginevra - just because someone accused her. and I did not like the end, either. But I love the music, and the battle scenes, of that movie! :)

EDIT to add: And I love Kingdom Of Heaven to pieces, too. The director's cut, not the Threater version; the Director's cut makes more sense, to me (as is the case with the LOTR movie's, actually, especially the second and even more with the third one). But then, I am a admitting Orlando Bloom fangirl, I like him in nearly every movie where I have seen him. Scratch that, in every movie where I have seen him, although in Ned Kelly, his character had nothing much to do; and I admit that as an actor, he has grown, since. :)

I never understood Richard Gere's appeal. He always seemed bland to me. Then again I haven't seen him in many movies but he never interested me as an actor. He was poorly cast in "First Knight" but I also disliked the way they portrayed Lancelot as this wandering rogue instead of a nobleman. I also disliked that they took all the magic elements such as Merlin and Excalibur out. They may as well have just made it a generic love triangle and set it in medieval times. And Sean Connery is much better looking and has that wonderful voice. It wouldn't be much of a choice between them in my opinion.

I haven't seen "Kingdom of Heaven" yet but it's on my Netflix list. I liked "13th Warrior" but I was a bit disappointed that they changed it from the book. Instead of being a little group of surviving Neanderthals as the Grendels, it was just a horde of primitive cannibals without any explanation as to who they were or why they were there. But Antonio Banderas was very good in the lead role and I liked the movie overall.

I wish I could get my hands on the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven. I mean, now that I've seen the theatre version twice (and will watch it several times, I guess), I'd certainly enjoy the full version even more.

Re: First Knight
Yeah, the story is very bland, and the costumes seem way too modern in places. I'd have liked the Lancelot, if he weren't named Lancelot, just some vagabund, and if he weren't played by Gere. I missed the magic parts, too - it wasn't really the Artus saga, just a medieval story. I only watched it for Sean Connery - I could watch him reading the phone buck and be completely awed. There's a reason why I "cast" him as my most important OC in the Halabor stories.

I never read "Eater of the Dead", so I had nothing to compare the movie with. You're right about the lacking background of the cannibals, and there are other gaping plotholes in the movie, too. But I loved the Viking characters, especially Buliwyf, and considering how much I dislike Antonio Banderas, I was amazed by him in the lead role, too. I think he was never better in anything.
