French Trip, Day 4, Part 2
Sep. 16th, 2007 10:04 amSorry for the delay. As you know, I'm having serious LJ issues right now, both work-related and concerning the current political situation in my country. I thought I'll try to post some more pics, though, as we're just about to come to the Really Cool Stuff(TM). So, here it is (look behind the tag).
After the wasted morning, due to the Tour de France and the total idiocy of our guide, we finally reached Domme. This is a fortified medieval town, once a seat of the Knights Templar, and it's a lot more beautiful than one would have thought.
We went up to the town with a little train - you can find those everywhere in France where there are sights to see. They aren't real trains, they just look like. In fact, they have normal wheels like busses or whatnot. But they're extremely cute and can pass through everywhere.
Anyway, we loved the town, visited a few expositions, including one about old furniture, which is Mum's passion, and I even saw the old tower where the Knights Templar had their dungeon. *shivers* In hindsight, we both regret not having gone to see the other exposition about old crafts, but, well, at the moment we weren't sure about the time, and we didn't know if our money would be enough. Too bad, I love that sort of thing, and it would have been interesting. Nex time, perhaps - assumed there will be a next time.
I was still saving my memory card for Carcassonne, but if you want more - and better - photos than mine, visit this site, and you'll understand what I mean.
In any case, here my only pics about the church of Domme: the altar room and a glass window:

And now on to La Roque Gageac, which was the absolute marvel of the day. It's a small village near the troglodyte caves, built partially into the sheer rock wall overhanging the river. There are no words to describe it - you simply have to see. Serving that purpose are the pics below.

From there on, we continued to Sarlat, which was supposed to be the highlight of the day, as a medieval town where the most historic movies are filmed in France... perhaps only seconded by Beynac Castle in that area.
Well, it probably would have been a highlight, had our idiot guide actually cared to show us the most important sights. Instead, she simply dropped us in front of the cathedral and left to get something to eat. And that after a half-wasted day when everyone was too deadly tired to go around and look for themselves in a completely unknown place.
As a result, we didn't see much of the historic town centre. Mum was exhausted and testy, and we finally ended in a bistro for a drink. I was very angry about the whole thing, as I'd had high hopes for Sarlat. As it is, there aren't many pics, as I mostly bought postcards, but here are the few I've made:

Next time: Souillac, Moissac, the fortified bridge of Cahors and the unparalleled wonders of Rocamadour. Stay tuned!
