As I got home tonight, I checked my Hotmail inbox. The one I have purely for ff.net purposes. There were 61 messages in it (no kidding). Every single bit of them was spam. Junk Mail filters are obviously breaking down or whatnot.

That is life for you, people! *shudders*

The only way I could get rid of junk mail was by setting the Junk Mail filter up to "Exclusive." That means that anybody not on my "Safe List" or in my "Contact List"'s messages end up in my Junk Mail folder. In the beginning, it's a bit annoying to keep adding people to your "Safe Lists" in order to stop it from filtering known messages, but after a month or so, you should be getting nothing but non-spam. :-) It's also really easy to direct all mailing list messages to your inbox, etc.

One of the popular newsmagazines here (I forget which one, unfortunately) ran a story recently which featured this frightening statistic: In January 2002, spam made up 12% of total emails sent; in March 2003, it was up to 43% of total emails sent.

Eventually someone's going to have to devise an effective way of dealing with spam, or email is going to become useless.

So it wasn't just me. And for some reason I even get spammed in Spanish of late. No, it's not funny anymore.

I was spammed only rarely until about two months ago - now I get five times as much spam as real messages! It is so frustrating! Something indeed must be done.
