Holiday in Cambridge - Day 3
Jun. 29th, 2006 09:27 amWell, brain-melting heat still has our wee little country in its merciless grip, so I'm escaping to pleasant memories once more. *g*
As I said, Mum decided not to go to London, after all, and have an easier day instead, doing some exploration of our own in Cambridge. I think the state of our feet frightened her a bit. *g*
Of course, going at it easy was something we never managed when on holiday, and this time was no exception. First, we walked around the city centre for some seven hour or so, revisiting some of the places we saw on the previous day and doing some shopping. Mum bought herself some tiny English china knick-knacks - she really does have a thing for chine - and I bought DVDs.
To my joyous surprise, I discovered at Borders one of my favourite classics, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. All right, feel free to laugh. I know the show is a bit trashy, but I love it nevertheless. And there were episodes in this boxed edition of both seasons that I never saw... for some mysterious reason, German TV chose not to show them. So, I seized the opportunity to spend some money and bought the whole thing.
I also bought the boxed edition of Earth Final Conflict's first season - the season I always liked most. That one started out as an incredible show... too bad the PTB managed to ruin it around the end completely. Anyway, my frist season records in German are somwehat ruined, so I was way too happy to get the original.
Still no luck with Stargate SG-1's 7th season, though. No box-ed. And I wasn't willing to pay almost twice the price of the box-ed, just for the covers of the individual discs. Too bad, I'd love to have that season.
We ate baked potatoes again (this time different sorts) and walked back to the B&B around 4 p.m. when we were more or less dead already. I got a cold on the previous evening - am not used to places where there's actually a breeze that makes the heat bearable, it seems - and so needed to wear a waistcoat and a cloth around my neck all the time, while other people were running around half-naked. They looked a bit funny at me, but what could I do? It's not my fault that I have such a sensitive throat, right?
In any case, we decided to go back to the town centre about an hour later, declaring that we can lie and rest at home. This time, we took the bus, and even managed not to end up in some neighbouring town. Great task managed by me, heh!
Reaching our destiny, we were facing an unpleasant surprise: it seems that almost every shop in Cambridge closes its doors at half past five in the afternoon. For spoiled people like us who are used to be able to shop till 7 p.m., it was a bit of a shock. Also, the cafés were closing, too, and we had actually planned to have dinner somewhere.
Of course, when you think you can't get any food, your hunger avakes with a vengeance. So we went food-hunting... well, limped would have been a better word for it. Finally, we ended up in a shop called Boots, which, to our surprise, didn't sell shoes but cosmetica and stationary stuff and even some food. We bought sandwiches and gathered all our remaining strength to walk home, as we had no idea where the bus-stop in that direction would be.
Creeping along Hills Road we have realized, of course, that there were all the places where we actually could have dinner, but it was too late for that already. We were beaten - but still happy, I must add.
So, we reached the B&B again, ate our sandwiches, drank ungodly amount of mineral water and made us a lazy evening. Mum was watching football (and falling asleep every twenty minutes, missing the goals with unerring instinct) and I finished reading Brother Cadfael's Penance. It's a great story, like every single one in the series.
So, that was our so-called easy day in Cambridge. The true adventures, however, were waiting for us on the next day.
BTW,
altariel1 has made a great deal of pictures. You can see them in her gallery. The red-haired hobbit with the big, round eyeglasses is me. *g*

Date: 2006-06-29 08:50 am (UTC)Why take it easy if there are lots of new things to see? That would be a waste of time!
But now I'm curious about your true adventures.
