Daniel is a nice bloke. I love Stargate. In truth, I liked it a lot better before they turned so incredibly serious in the later seasons. And with Richard Dean Anderson out of the picture, I don't know how steadily I'll be watching it. But it's still a good show.

I must admit that I have only ever seen the "Stargate" film and I liked Daniel mostly because he was the most anthropologically minded of the whole crew and I have a knack for exploring cultures and languages and characters who do this (which might explain my fascination with "Thorongil", hm....).

And there are very few straight out "military" characters (in the cliched Holywood sense) that I like, too, so there wew not that many options left in the film

The problem with the movie is that the military characters - particularly the one played by Kurt Russell - are arrogant assholes. In the series, where Richard Dean Anderson took over the role from Kurt Russell, the atmosphere is very different. Much more relaxed, and RDA adds a great deal of dry humour to the character of Colonel O'Neill.

Of course, I've been a RDA affectionado ever since "McGyver", but he really does a great job. And they have a female scientist on the team, who's also a soldier, and this interesting alien, so... yeah, the series might not have all the visual tricks as the movie, but it's great.

The only thing I find they screwed up is the fact that they never seem to have any communications problems with the race of the week. Everyone seems to understand English for some strange reason. In that aspect, the film was better. The scene where Daniel and Sha'ree work out the common language is very realistic.
