News from the jam factory

I've made two sorts of apple jam today: one with elderflower syrup (not elderberries, as I said last time - I keep missing these things up) and one with raisins, orange zest and gingerbread spices. Both turned out very delicious. The tiny jars will go to the fair, the bigger ones will stay with us and used for palatschinken or topfenknödel. Yum!

I also finished the little pillow cases and started filling them with cherry pits. Only it turned out that I got so many cherry pits donated that I'd need to make at least four more pillow cases. I'm not sure I'll actually do it. 14 of the things are more than enough. I might just put the cherry pits into jars - they've been sterilized thoroughly, after all - and keep them until next year. Then I'll have a start of supplies already.

Part of the reason why I don't want to make more of the things is because two of my fingers are mildly injured. The corner of a fingernail rubbed my index finger sensitive, and I burned my middle finger while jam making. Even so, I'll have to sew nine more cherry pit pillows closed in the upcoming days, which is bad enough.

I called H in the early evening. We discussed decluttering and letting things go for quite a while. I wish I could visit her, but that would take at least four to five hours, due to the distance and the fact that her house is on top of a steep hill, and I don't dare to leave Mum alone. It's one thing to leave her when I don't go very far and can be home within the hour if I have to. But going to an outlying village where the busses only run twice in an hour, plus over an hour from the bus to our building by tram... that's too much of a risk for me.

I won’t be able to do as much as I would like, but I must go on. I can’t afford to get too much behind schedule.

I’ll take it slower but can’t really stop. There is still too much to do, and I want to finish this particular project as soon as possible.

So much to do! Wishing you lots of energy for your tasks!
I might have to dust and vacuum one of these days. And the kitchen needs a good mopping. I cleaned the kitchen cupboards the other day. I loathe housework. Hate it with a fiery passion. The only tasks I regularly undertake are bathroom and toilet cleaning, and dishwashing. The rest has to wait for me to get so sick of it that I can no longer procrastinate.

Believe me, I'd do the same if I could... starting with a brutal decluttering of the flat. But I'm not the one calling the shots here.

I hear you re leaving mum alone. I think that was the thing I resented the most about caring for my own mum. I could not go anywhere. NB. If the postal service is co-operating you should receive some scraps of pretty cotton print fabric soon. You can keep it for next year's pillow making.

I think your fingers/hands need to rest a bit in order to heal.

It must be difficult to visit H when it's so difficult to get there. I know you wouldn't want to leave your mum alone for too long. It would be awful if something happened to her while you were away.

Absolutely understandable- your mum might take another fall, because she seems a bit rebellious and ignores that she isn´t 70 anymore... Take care of your hands, please, or you might have to stop doing handiwork for a while!

I was afraid of that, but my fingers proved harder than I thought. They are practically healed by now.
