I've begun posting parts of my Orc essay to the Otherworlds discussion board. Comments, questions, discussion, etc., are very welcome. It's in the public area, so everyone can comment without the need to sign up to the board.

A promising start; I'd like to read more, especially regardingt the problems Tolkien ran into while considering the religious and philosophical consequences of his earlier concepts of Orcisne nature. And you're absolutely right about Jackson missing the point - his failure to address the religious aspects of LotR is fairly consistent, and when he does he tends to get it wrong.

I've posted Part 3, and I'll be typing up more as soon as I manage. We're having the annual cultural evening at school on Friday, so things are a way bit crazy right now.

The other parts will mostly handle the fanfiction appearance of Orcs, though, and my own ideas about the Uruk-hai, so I'm not sure how much it would match your interests.

Erm... where does Jackson address the religous aspects of LOTR? Granted, I was fuming too much through TTT and ROTK to catch any subtle hints, but what have I missed?

The scene in Minas Tirith, where Gandalf quotes Tolkien's words about Frodo's arrival in the Undying Lands to assure Pippin there's a life after death. It's too much out of context for me, even if it could be maintained that Frodo's passage to the Undying Lands is a metaphor for death. Other than that, I agree there isn't much.

I'll read Part 3 soon.

Oh, that... I must admit, I disliked Gandalf in ROTK so much (particulary his parts with Denethor) that I didn't pay him too much attention. Somehow, that scene was lost on me among the battles and more battles and monsters and even bigger and uglier monsters.
