Well, I gave the recipe a try and this came out of it:

My personal opinion: the sponge is absolutely delicious - light and aromatic, a true delight. However, the icing is way too sweet for our taste, and I actually like sweet. Next time - and there definitely will be a next time - I'll simply put either melted chocolate or simple coffee-flavoured icing on the sponge.

Other than the morning baking, it was a quiet day. We both tried to recover from yesterday's housework madness. I made a simple carrot soup, did some blanket stitch on the half-finished little lavender sachets, and that was it, basically. Lots of Solitaire playing and fanfic reading on Methuselah-the-laptop. Since it won't allow me to install the newest version of the antivirus programme, I mostly use it off-line, just to be on the safe side.

As for fanfic, I switched from Enterprise to Voyager, re-reading some old, saved favourites. Some of them I still like a lot, but I've discovered that the man-on-man action no longer bears any particular interest for me. It was exciting when it was new, but there's only so many ways one can insert Character A into Character B, and after a while it gets repetitive and boring. Even in my old faves, I simply skip over those parts nowadays. Does it mean I'm getting old? ;))

That looks good :) I don't use Mary's topping either, but something simpler — I think plain coffee icing would work perfectly.

Sure, here you go:

It is dead easy to do, especially if you have an electric chopper. I don't and chopping the walnuts by hand was the longest part of the process.

That's funny, someone else mentioned that recently. ITA, it's just not that interesting anymore.

Yeah, the novelty is gone and with it the guilty pleasure — we've outgrown the whole thing, I think.

Sorry the icing was too sweet, but they do look delicious!

They are delicious — the sponge is fantastic. I'll just change the topping next time.

that looks delicious. I'd also prefer the coffee icing. Nuts are so bad for me, although I love them, and chopping them is very hard work.

Personally, I'm not very much into walnuts, but use them for baking sometimes. I know people who eat them raw as a snack... I could never do that.

we used to eat bushels of nuts when we were children, especially at Christmas, I still eat cashews and brazils as a snack, but walnuts stick in my teeth far too painfully. I've never had very good teeth, but I've now had several crowns removed, and the teeth filed down, so walnuts are not a good idea.

I do! I love walnuts (we used to have a walnut tree with the smallest and sweetest nuts) but I know that a lot of people don't, most folk I know.

The slice does look delicious — pity about the icing — and that tray is adorable!

I hear you. Assembling the IKEA bed scene does not interest me and I skip most of those scenes. To be honest, I have never really been interested in them.

I find the relationship part still intriguing if it is well written. I'm just bored to dead by the "mechanics".

No problem with man-on-man on my end. It´s simply life. I am getting old and I got used to it (colleagues etc).

I don't have a problem with it, either. I just find friendships more interesting.
