Low-grade sewing
Apr. 11th, 2024 07:34 pmaka the best laid plans of old hags and meeces often go awry...
The original plan was to go and do some grocery shopping and perhaps work a bit on the new baby book, assuming the slave labour (=housework) permits. I set my alarm clock for 6:30 in the morning, engaging snooze mode. The first time I actually heard the alarm was at 7am. Then I felt so horribly drained that I reset the clock for 7:30... and got up a few minutes after 8am. Still feeling like sh*t. So I decided that no shopping would be done today. After all, we had everything we urgently needed, and there was a chance to get stuff that's reduced in price tomorrow as well.
But I was still somewhat determined to work on the baby book, so (after performing our usual morning tasks) I selected the paper for the new page and looked at the inspiratorial pattern. It seemed so complicated that my brain went into self-defence mode at once and I laid the whole thing aside. Instead, I took out Mum's favourite home gown - the one the paramedics cut up to pieces when she collapsed on the street, back in February - and started repurposing it into dish clothes... if I use the expression correctly. I mean those pieces of cloth you use to grab hot pots and saucepans and the likes, so that they won't burn your hand. I managed to save enough cloth pieces to make perhaps three or four such things... from an entire gown! It must be part of paramedic training to cut up clothes in the most destructive way, so that as little can be repurposed from the rest as possible. Otherwise I'd have tried to sew the gown together again - Mum used to love it so much!
And since I was at the low grade sewing anyway, I have mended Mum's nightgown before both sleeves could have fallen off, due to the unravelling of the seams. At least I've managed to finish that. And I realized once again that I still really, really hate ordinary sewing. It is sooo boring! At least I could watch crap telly while doing it.
Having no more leftovers (aside from the soup), I had to cook today, too. So I improvised a dish that allowed me to use up some stuff from the freezer and the pantry (= the corner cupboard), respectively. I opened a can of chopped pork, boiled some pasta, cooked some frozen broccoli, made cheese sauce (from the package) and layered the whole thing, topping it with grated cheese. It turned out really good, so I'll probably make it again in the future. Plus, I've made so much that we'll eat it for another day at the very least, and use the pasta that didn't fit into the dish for another meal, in a different form.
That frees me from cooking today, and perhaps tomorrow as well, which is always a blessing.

Date: 2024-04-12 04:50 pm (UTC)i have to admit that I never ever owned a pot cloth in my life. I always use dish towels... I know, I am a bad house wife.

Date: 2024-04-13 07:01 pm (UTC)We call them pot holders. I have a few that have seen better days. Silicone is the trend now, so the cloth ones are on the out, but I much prefer them. Guess I am old fashioned. Your meal sounds good and fairly easy. I don't think we have canned chopped pork here, which would be really convenient. I usually have all the ingredients for recipes, except the meat.
