Preserves!

I love them - who doesn't? - especially homemade ones. So I decided to try my hand on the so-called winter jams or Christmassy jams, namely orange marmalade and spicy apple jam. Because, you know, I've got so few projects running and have so much free time to spend...

In any case, the oranges are sliced and generously sugared and are waiting to be processed tomorrow. The recipe says they ought to rest that way a couple of hours; a whole night is even better. Since the balcony is nice and cool in these days, I covered the dish with a plate and placed them on the little book-case there for tomorrow.

The spicy apple jam, however, is finished and sitting peacefully under a thick blanket. These thermo blankets provide fantastic insulation: the jams usually take two days or so to cool completely. After that, they can stand in the kitchen cupboard for years, without going bad.

Anyway, the spicy apple jam is an experiment. Originally I planned to use the recipe [livejournal.com profile] noadvertising so generously shared with me - until I remembered that Mum doesn't like raisins. At all. I was the same way for the first 50 or so years of my existence, but in the recent decade and a half the little buggers have grown on me. Especially gold raisins, but those are too expensive.

So I decided to combine [livejournal.com profile] noadvertising's recipe with the one I use for apple sauce (to pancakes, Topfenknödel and the likes) and thus produced a delicious - and fairly spicy - jam, thanks to the ginger, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, apple vinegar and maple syrup that were added to the mix. Mum checked the leftovers that didn't fit into the prepared jars and very much approved of the taste. So we'll eat the jam to Spekulatius, most likely in Advent. It will warm us up really nicely, I think.

Crafting-wise I've made some modest progress, too. Another doughnut-shaped keyring is finished, the remaining four are fully decorated and equipped with all necessary parts. There wasn't time for much else today.

The weather remains fairly pleasant, with the occasional mild rain. This afternoon was dry, though (the rain was kind enough to fall during the night), so Mum and I went for a short walk. We have to put the days with an accommodating weather to good use, after all.

You know why I do this jam? Because hubby hates raisins! And while you are not allowed to anger your mum I am well allowed to do so with my husband- my revenge is a sweet one!

That is the spirit! *g*
The fun part is, though, that Mum has no problem eating raisins in the müsli — perhaps because they get softened in the yogurt I use to it.

The apple jam sounds nice.
I'll have to talk my mum into making some after our recipe, that always was so nice but she hasn't made it for years.

Well, the apple jam turned out a bit too liquid, but we'll use it as apple sauce, so it isn't a problem. ;)

It is very yummy — just not thick enough, alas!

I think I actually prefer marmalade to jam. A particularly spicy marmalade sounds wonderful...although not wonderful enough to tempt me to make one. ;)

I never know what's the difference. I call all these things jam because that's a shorter word.;))
