... with temperatures above 30°C! Way too hot for me, so I'm staying indoors whenever I can. The insulation work they did on our building two years ago works wonders in this early stage of summer heat: we've got 23°C inside! Of course, when the heat remains for weeks in a go, not even insulation can resist forever, but right now I like it in the flat.

That said, I had to go out in the midday sun today, but it was a nice occasion. My friend Elise, now also retired, organizes a little party for colleagues of "old times" (meaning 20+ years spent in our school or longer) each year to see the school year out. We were ten people altogether, but since there is a lovely, shadowy inner garden behind their building, it was really pleasant, sitting under the trees, having cold drinks and snacks and all that. Catching up on each other's lives and on the shit the government heaps upon all branches of education. Well, the latter was not so pleasant, but at least we could commiserate with the poor slaves still labouring in the education business.

To contribute to the party, I got up at godawful 6.50 in the morning to bake those savoury cheesy scones I usually bring as a guest gift. Switching on the oven any later would have been suicidal. Even so, I was half-baked myself when I was done, even though these little guys are finished in about 45 minutes. But they are always a hit, and I made enough for us to have something to snack on later.

What else? Mum had a visit from the physiotherapist, and I cut out some further background elements for the felt books. But that was about all. Still not bad on a day like this one.

I think the last thing I'd do at the moment is baking. We ate up to 26 inside, at least air con will be working from tomorrow on!

It wasn't so bad in the early morning — save for the fact that I had to get up, you know, early. For me early, that is.

I always keep all the ingredients in the kitchen cupboard/freezer, so that I can make them any time we feel like having some. ;))

Heat, ugh, it’s the worst. I’d much rather be cold than hot — you can always pile more clothes on. But then then we don’t really get cold here; last night it was 0 degrees, and that’s about as cold as it gets. Have to go outside to see what got frost damaged in the garden. I hope it’s not too bad.

What is your garden like? It is a new one, isn't it?

My “garden” is all in pots, due to our rental situation. Also, pots are much easier for me to maintain with my disabilities. I have 30-40 pots of flowers — annuals, perennials and bulbs. Right now few things are flowering, just alyssum and lobelia and some daisies. And, best news of all — no frost damage! (So far). Hopefully the plants I selected this year are hardier than previous selections.

One of the many joys of living on the coast is that temperatures tend to be a couple of degrees cooler here. 30 degrees were in the forecast for some parts of the UK the other day, but not the east coast.

30C is too hot for me, too — but it does sound like lovely chance to meet up with old colleagues.
