... and other crafty adventures.

As you all know, I've finished my textile book that contained barn animal finger puppets as a tool for teaching first-term pupils a certain children's song. Our conductor (also the music teacher of our school) was very happy with it... until she discovered that the turkey was missing. Well, the song has several different versions; the one I know doesn't have a turkey in it, and the book I was copying only had a finger puppet that looked like a very odd black duck. I though it was a spare and didn't copy it.

Now, if Monica wants a turkey, I'll give her that. In order to make a somewhat more convincing one I looked up on Google what they birds are supposed to look - the last time I saw one for real was when I was, ah, seven or so years old. Six decades blur the memories a bit. So yeah, apparently the beasts are supposed to be black, with a bit of white and a red neck. So I made this:

Still not very turkey-ish, but at least it doesn't look like a duck that has fallen through the chimney, right?

And since I was working with black felt already (to the great displeasure of my poor old eyes), I started on the next book, for another song. It starts with three crows, so three crows I was about to make. Well, I've cut out their general shapes, sewn on the beaks and the eyes, and one even has his wings. As they are cutting down the wheat in the song, they're going to have little scythes, too - if I can figure out how to make them hold it securely.

Other than that, I made pancakes for lunch, with home-made strawberry jam, took out the dratted hoover to empty it (cleaning frenzy ahead), had a nice phone chat with H. and played some solitaire on my geriatric laptop. Coming up: some crap telly with Mum, then to bed because tomorrow will be intense. Not only because of the concert; Mum wants to have her hair washed, and I have to cook something for two days in advance (as I said, cleaning frenzy ahead). I just hope I can come up with something quick and easy. *sigh*

Thanks! The other book will contain a great deal of animals, including three tabby cats, a cow, a fox, a donkey and many others. But making finger puppets is fun and easy. :)

This is the song that goes with the book and the finger puppets:

All children love finger puppets and the stories that go with them! Did you do a wild turkey? Because the ones I knew were white or black with white. And all of them were ugly. Sorry, turkey!

Yes, unfortunately they are all ugly. I don't know if this one is wild or domesticated. I just looked at pictures on Google for the colours and came up with this one.

The craft projects sound adorable, but I do agree, black felt is hard to see how the sewing is going.
Busy day ahead for you (and fun and exciting too I hope, with the concert!), so whatever you cook, I do hope it will be quick and easy to make a large amount of for the two days ahead!
You're going to need a day of rest when the approaching cleaning frenzy is finished! ♥️

Actually, I've just cancelled my participation in the concert (will explain in the next entry), but even so, these are very busy times.

Children's songs can have so many different versions. We talk about it in the clinic sometimes, and it's fun to see all the differences.

Yes, well, we should have cleared in advance to which version the book was supposed to be. *g*

Definitely not ugly enough to be considered a proper turkey. *g*

Not to mention educational; it teaches the children what has to be done for the bread to come to their table.

Like you, I have only a vague mental image of a turkey. Also, I have some black fabric ready to make a pair of trousers, but keep putting off the project, because I hate sewing black on black. I can only do it in daylight.

Last time I saw a turkey it was running around the yard without a head and Mum running after it with an axe. A bloody one. She wanted to slaughter the beast, but it had so much energy it could run for a while even after its head had been hacked off. (My students were always properly terrified when I told them the story. My seven-year-old self found it actually funny. But again, I was used to keep the chickens' legs immobile while Granny slit their throat as a child.)

I'm trying to remember what children's song has a turkey in it… The only thing I can come up with is "Old MacDonald," but the version of that that I know doesn't have a turkey, either!

I've seen you around at [community profile] get_knitted. Would you like to be Dw friends? (My entries are all locked, so I've gone ahead to give you access so you can see what I'm about.)
