... if you have no servants, as the Hungarian saying goes.

Today we had extra choir practice because of the concert on Sunday, so I decided to buy some cheesy buns (Käsepogatschen, for the German speakers among us) to go with our leftover soup. The practice started at 2pm, so I didn't really have the time to cook and to have lunch before it.

Guess what? Aldi didn't have the things. In fact, the Aldi close to school barely had anything in the way of rolls, pretzels, buns or whatever. Okay, I told myself, there's a small bakery near to school, let's try it there. Granted, they did have something with cheese, but the things were as big as my head and looked extremely hard. Good as cannon fodder, not so good for someone with barely a few teeth like Mum. All right, I tried the big supermarket nearby (part of a local chain). They had something that would have been acceptable, but it was so insanely expensive that I couldn't bring myself to buy it. I mean, if seasonal fruit like apricots that have barely come out so far cost a fortune, I can understand that. But simple, everyday bakery products? It's insane!

By that time I was so angry I refused to give up my cheesy buns. So when I got home, at half past three, I simply went to the kitchen and baked some. Mum told me I was insane but ate them quite eagerly nonetheless. *g*

We are talking about these guys, just with grated cheese on top instead of seeds:

It is a quick and easy recipe, I was done in 45 minutes or less, including the grating of the cheese. They are also very yummy, I think by tomorrow they'll be all gone.

Before choir practice I had the chance to meet some more (ex-)colleagues, including some that I hadn't even seen this year yet, so it was nice. The visit to the Remo craft shop, OTOH, was very disappointing. I wanted craft punches, but while they had a great quantity of the stuff, all of them were either angels or flowers or holly leaves - all of which I already have. Grrr!

The buns look really good.
It's crazy how much prices for bread etc have gone up as well.

Buns look fantastic! I always have flaky pastry in the freezer, so that i can make cheesy rolls when the need arises. Even here it happens that, despite a bread baking department, Lidl does not offer bread there- no dough pieces get delivered now and then.

And I always have fresh yeast and Emmenthaler cheese in the freezer, so that I can make these buns. *g*

Those cheese buns look very like our scones...although we mix cheese into the dough, as well as topping with cheese. I love cheese scones.

I think these are basically the same thing, only that they are made with yeast dough. But I do mix grated cheese into the dough as well as on the top, too.

Oh gosh, how frustrating when trying to save time goes off the rails like that!
Good luck with the choir tomorrow! I'll be thinking of you!

Thanks. We'll need every good thought available for the concert tomorrow.
