Which means getting up at an ungodly time to get to the supermarkets before they'd have sold out everything on offer. I was fortunate in that aspect today, although I also bought some rather price-y stuff. Like Cheddar, for the first time in my life, as it is a required ingredient in the coronation quiche. If I'm about to leave out the beans, at least I'll have authentic British cheese.

I got done so early that Mum - who'd had a bad night, the poor thing - was still in bed when I came home, so I did some work on the textile book until she decided to get up after all. We did our morning routine, then watched German daytime TV while I continued sewing my Wichtel. 4 of them are finished now, save for the little bells I still have to get from somewhere for their hats. [livejournal.com profile] noadvertising says the bells are obligatory, so I won't be able to replace them with pom-poms (although I still might if nothing else helps).

After lunch, which consisted of leftover carrot soup and some cheesy buns I bought at Aldi, I started rearranging the shelves in the anteroom that serve as our pantry (as the people designing our 10-storey concrete buildings didn't saw it necessary to include a pantry in the design; clearly, they were men who never had to cook). Well, rearranging is too big of a word, most likely, as the ordering principle remained the same. I just put all my spices, Puddingpulver, Suppenwürfel and Tütensuppen in order of their "best before" date. I also discovered two 250-gram-packages of dried plums that have run off last month, so I moved them into the fridge, where they'll happily live for another couple of months without going bad, if previous experience is any indication.

I talked on the phone to my friends Evie and Elise (the latter of whom's awaiting the birth of her 5th grandchild any time now), so it was a productive day, both work-wise and socially. Tomorrow there will be much baking. As there will be at least two recipes I've never tried before, I'm a tad nervous, but let's hope they'll turn out well.

I had to look up the recipe for the coronation quiche ... I have to admit I think it's a bit of a weird thing to have for a coronation.

Well, Elizabeth II's coronation chicken was a fairly weird dish, too. And Charles is proud of being eco-minded, so eating veggies is probably a statement.

Good luck with the baking! I'm eager to hear how your new recipes turn out. Pantry space really is forever a pain, and has only become more so in these past years that we need to be hoarding again what we can get on sale.

Yeah, it is really annoying sometimes.
If the things turn out any good I'll post a picture.
