As always on Saturdays. Actually, more than usual. Too many chores for this old hag in a single day. *sigh*

So, let's see:
- the usual morning rituals with Mum;
- laundry;
- cooking for two days in advance;
- preparing the veggies and the block of hard cheese for freezing (aka grating, pre-cooking and portioning them, respectively);
- taking out the dratted vacuum cleaner to empty it, as we'll have the next cleaning frenzy on Monday.

Still, I managed to write about half a page while the meal was cooking and Luise Sr. the washing machine, was running. And I squeezed in a tiny bit of crafting as well. I've applied the arched windows in all five Hello Kitty bedrooms, together with the curtains - and realized that the nice, round carpets I had made in advance will be way too large. So I'll have to redo them, in a smaller size. The already existing ones will be recycled as slightly bizarre sunflowers on some future cards or whatnot. Nothing gets wasted in this household.

I also had a nice, long chat with my friend Evie, who gave me a thorough report on the current state of her new garden. I'm glad she finds so much delight in gardening; she more than deserves to do something for herself. Not that a lot of other people wouldn't profit from her works, she's a generous soul, but it's good to see her joy over the whole thing.

That was a lot of kitchen work but at least now it is done and future you will profit.

I was going to make lasagne for three days today, but that large chunk of ground meat didn't defrost in time, so we're just having some instant soup and a sandwich. We're too lazy to cook something different now.

So am I. For the first time in her life, after raising three children (and now on grandmother duty from time to time), she finally can do something for herself. Well, not entirely for herself, as I mentioned above, she's very generous with her produce, but this is of her own choosing, and after the recent years that were so bloody hard for her, she deserves to enjoy herself.

I'm very generous with my produce too, but for me that's part of the joy and blessing, to be able to bless others. It gives a unique sense of purpose, and even if I don't expect it, people always give back. I'm glad she's experiencing that too.

That is just about how she explained it to me. :)

That’s a lot of work, for sure. I like the idea of freezing veggies and cheese. How do you thaw the cheese? Do you add it to your cooking in the frozen form, or do you pre-thaw? I waste so many veggies because I buy two weeks of groceries at a time, and then if I flare up and I’m unwell! I can’t use them while they’re still fresh. I can’t afford it, and it’s a dreadful waste anyway. Very aggravating!

I only freeze block cheese that I want to use in grated form later for baking. I simply make smaller portions, wrap them in cling foil and take out when I need it. Usually I grate it as soon as it has thawed a bit, otherwise it would be barely possible. But I think you can grate the cheese in advance and freeze it in small plastic containers — the kind that has tightly closing lids. In that case you can add it to your cooking in the frozen form, I think. I never tried it, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

As for veggies, I boil them for about 4-5 minutes, then drain them, let them cool completely, and then put them in plastic bags into the freezer. Again, I make portions I'd need for cooking one meal and then use them in frozen form. I also freeze meat (usually mincemeat or chicken breasts), but those need to be thawed out before cooking. Preferably overnight in the fridge (not in the freezer, of course), especially the chicken, because of the salmonella threat, but I often simply put it in cold water and it's thawed out enough to be used in about two hours.

The washing machine is running in my house as well, later to be followed by the tumble drier. There is, however, no cleaning frenzy on my horizon any time soon. I may just flick around the house with the spray polish. Or I may not. There are more Chinese costume drama's to watch, after all.

I don't make the decisions in this house where cleaning is concerned. Or any other kind of housework.

I proudly present the operator of my vacuum cleaner- it´s hubby! Since I suffer from allergic asthma he´s the lucky one who has to do the cleaning and emptying!

Unfortunately, we live too far apart to even consider borrowing him from time to time. *g*
