... went entirely without pancakes in our house. In fact, the only things we cooked today were scrambled eggs and mashed potatoes. Which is odd timing, as the day is called in Hungarian húshagyókedd, which means in rough translation: the Tuesday when you give up meat. For a while anyway. This used to be the last day before Lent when people were allowed to eat meat, if I'm not mistaken. At least under the particular rock where I live.(*)

We had choir practice, though, which was fun as always. And I did a tiny bit of crafting; "only" 18 pages left before all 3 baby books are finished. Plus the binding. And some embellishments (read: lots of those). Ah, well, I still have two months to go. Even though one of them will also be a [livejournal.com profile] picowrimo session, assuming any of the usual crowd will be interested.

(*) Which reminds me: I originally planned to make a chicken-tarragon pie tomorrow. But tomorrow is Ash Wednesday: a day of severe fasting. Meaning that anything with meat is a big no-no. Not obligatory beyond the age of 60, but Mum is a bit particular in such things. So we might have Topfenknödel instead. Also yummy, but that means the pie will have to wait until Saturday. Because I won't have the time for elaborate cooking on Thursday, and Mum refuses to eat meat on Fridays during Lent. *scratches head*

I'm looking forward to the herring in the canteen tomorrow, but that's how far I'll go with lent.

I wouldn't make such a big thing of it, either, but Mum has become quite religious (and conservative) in her older years.

Unlike me, my family is quite religious but I don't remember ever having pancakes for breakfast on this day, that was mostly a weekend thing.

We don't do it, either. As I said, we have a completely different name for the day; on that isn't even associated with pancakes.

My parents’ religion was an off branch of Lutheran. Sort of Mennonites without the old fashioned traditions. So, no fasting, no holy days. It was somewhat austere, with no special days of significance other than Christmas and Easter. There’s something beautiful about the saint’s days and other significant days.

The liturgic year does have a stabilizing effect, I always found. It gives life a framework within which you can organize your life, gives you things to look forward to and all that... as long as it isn't overdone. :)

I generally don't have pancakes on Shrove Tuesday either, because I usually have a riding lesson. :)

Oh, it's called Shrove Tuesday, too? I didn't know that. Thanks for expanding my vocabulary!

My family (Catholic) always had pancakes for dinner on Shrove Tuesday when I was growing up! As I understand, in the olden days, people didn't just give up meat, but eggs and dairy, too, so the pancakes were made to use all that stuff up.

Not obligatory beyond the age of 60, but Mum is a bit particular in such things Aw, good for your Mum! I was happy to throw it aside when I turned 60, lol. Then again, Friday is our day to have sushi, so we uphold the letter if not the spirit of the rule! (Sushi being such a treat, it's not like giving anything up.)

I didn't know that! (It was never a tradition where I live.) Thanks for widening my horizon!

I feel like a very lax Christian, because I did not even know it was Shrove Tuesday yesterday. Not that I have the means to make pancakes anyway. I had a baked potato with tuna.

My mum would not even have known how to do edible pancakes, even though she had been very religious all her life. Maybe she should have prayed harder to God for better cooking skills!
