Since I'm not supposed to leave a house and we've run out of bread, I decided to try my hand on another Turkish specialty, namely sesame rings. We used to buy it every time we visited Vienna and loved them; and since my attempt at making Turkish flatbread was a full success, I thought "how hard can it be"? Which, as we all know is one of those famous last words...

I consulted the Internet about recipes and found a Dr. Oetker one that appeared fairly simple. I'm all for simple, and since this was a recipe that required sunflower oil and warm water (the latter meaning that I could spare the milk for tomorrow morning), I though it would go well.

No, it did not! The dough felt leathery right from the moment on when I put it together, and steadfastly refused to rise as much as a millimetre. I still baked it, because there still wasn't any bread in the house, and this was the result:

They look pretty, don't they? Well, appearances are deceiving. They are hard like shoesoles and can only be eaten after being halved horizontally and toasted. Even so, they are fairly horrible. I think I'm giving up on that recipe and will try one of the complicated ones next time. Because we still both love sesame rings and want the experience relived.

Also: Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] noadvertising! I hope you had a grand old time!

I tried bagels once but I found they weren't my thing.

Apparently. Although we will eat them, since there still isn't any other bread in the house. *g*

A pity they didn't turn out nice, they look good, though.

Very disappointing; especially in Anbetracht der Tatsache (sorry, no idea how to say that in English) that we'll have to eat them in the next two days.

Sorry for your baking gone bad, but those sesame rings look so pretty! What a pity they turned out bad! And thank you for the birthday wishes!

Love the look of the Turkish bread, shame the taste didn’t deliver!

Could any of your friends drop off a few staples at the door for you? I wish I lived closer. At least here in the UK all the big supermarkets do home delivery now.

They do it over here, too. We just never use the option. I'll bounce down on Thursday, early in the morning, when there are very few people, wearing a mask and gloves and all that.

They do look good, and at least they're edible toasted! Chris's bread recipe that didn't turn out the way he wanted was from the Dr. Oetker site too. I guess it's not a good site to look for recipes.

Yes, I heard that from various places by now. I just googled for sesame ring recipes — something easy — and so ended up there... never again!

Looks are clearly misleading in this case... unfortunately.
