My friend Evie was here yesterday and brought us tomatoes and courgettes (from her old garden) as well as grapes (from her new garden). She's a generous person, and so I spent the whole morning peeling and grating courgettes (for tomorrow's midday meal as well as for freezing) and peeling and hacking tomatoes, as this is the only way Mum can eat them. The ones that didn't go into tomorrow's meal are now in a plastic container in the fridge and will be used as tomato salad next week.

Fortunately, the morning was pleasantly cool. The serious warming up started around noon, and now we are cooking in our juices again. Which is only moderately fun, as we've already started to pack for Wednesday, when the big, annual carpet cleaning will take place. We do have help with it, but it is still an unpleasant job that requires lots of preparations before and endless packing things back to their places afterwards. But we have wall-to-wall carpet in both bedrooms and in the living room, and if we don't want to get asthma or whatnot from the dust, they need to be thoroughly washed at least once a year. And it has to be done in high summer, so that the dratted carpets would dry out quickly. *sigh*

I'm so glad I don't have carpet in the flat anymore, I used to have it in the bedroom and living room when I moved here.

Will someone come to wash them or will you have to do this as well?

Fortunately, we have a guy with professional equipment who does the actual washing. But packing the flat together so that he'd have the space to do so is always a gargantuan work. We've moved into this rather small flat back in 1977 with the old large pieces of furniture, so...

ugh...maybe he knows someone who'd like to do that part for a piece of cake or something like that? I know I would :D I have an appetite for tomato salad since I read about it.

I wondered why you peel courgettes and tomatoes, but yes, that makes perfect sense if that's the only way your mum can eat them. :/

Yeah, she couldn't digest the peels. By the way, is they any way to preserve tomatoes, save for making tomato juice? Not for this year, but who knows what is coming...

You can freeze them if you have room. They'll turn to mush, but that's good in this case since you can just pick out the peels and squash out the pulp. Or run them through a juicer and can the juice. Or peel them, run a stick blender through them and can them. I can this sort of thing the way I can everything else liquid-y, using sterilized jars, bringing the stuff up to a boil and filling it in boiling-hot then twisting on the lids.

Edit: Oh I read that wrong! Save for making juice. I often chop them up, stuff them into sterilized jars raw, add a little salt, and then boil the jars for about 10 minutes in the canning apparatus or a large pot. You can also can them whole that way.

Thank you, I'll give them a try next year. Right now, I don't have the space or any sizeable jars left.

From the sound of it, the only good news on the carpet front is that you are having a heat wave. I am sure your body does not agree with that, however. They're forecasting a high of 20c here today, which is quite warm enough for me.
