So, here is the pic with the brand new meringue hairdo:

Poor Mum, she had herself all prettied up for her 90th, and it seems we'll be the only ones to celebrate her birthday. The Covid situation is really bad over here, and the only family we still have contact with (Little Emma & Co.) are all unvaxxed. The adults have all gone through Covid, every single one of them, so they are protected to a certain extent, but no-one dares to come over and endanger Mum, which is understandable and responsible, especially as Theo (Little Emma's big brother) keeps bringing home germs from Kindergarten, where Omicron is happily breeding right now.

It still doesn't change the fact that there won't be any family to celebrate with Mum on her 90th. We'll have the fancy cake - for which I've actually baked the sponges today - all for ourselves. The plan is to prolong the family "party" (with about 6 guest on two different occasions, just in case) somewhen in March when the Omicron wave is supposed to ebb, but that isn't the same. I'm really sad about the whole thing.

Since I baked all afternoon and had other chores in the morning, not much else was done today. We had brunch around 11.30 and will have some early supper; that about took care of the cooking part.

Poor Mum to be having such a low key birthday, and for her 90th too. If it is any consolation, she looks fantastic, and no way is she 90!

Tell her I am raising a toast to her, all the way from Norway, and hope she has a chill birthday today and several fancy parties later. Happy Birthday!

Aww, thanks! The actual birthday is on the 30th, but we're up to both ears in the preparations. I'm so making that fancy cake, and a yummy dinner as well (let's hope our digestion will cooperate this time), and I'll make and post photos about all.

Aww ... that's a pity you can't have a celebration!
Poor mum.

It is so unfair! She'd have had a committee coming to our home (from the town leaders) to congratulate her — but we had to get the writ per post, as well as the money 90-year-olds and above get (also from the city) for their birthdays... :(
But staying safe has priority, even if we don't like it.

Does your mom speak German as well?

Better than I do, actually. She grew up speaking German with Grandpa and Hungarian with Grandma. :)

In that case, let me add a heartfelt "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag". She looks very pretty and maybe you can tell her how many people congratulated her from all over the world and participated (a bit) in her celebration!

The photo is great! I have to chuckle at your description of her pretty 'meringue' hairdo:) I'm feeling sad for you and your Mum too. After all the preparations and special hairdo for Mum, it's such a let-down to have to cancel the family celebration on her actual birthday. It will be nice to have a belated celebration later on, but it's not the same, is it. It's quite an accomplishment to be reaching the grand age of 90! Hugs to both of you.

Thank you! :) It is a let-down indeed, but I showed her these congratulations that come from all around the globe and she's very pleased about them.

I love your mum's hairdo, it's pretty and iit's festive and she wears her years gracefully. Please tell her I'm sending best wishes and congratulations from New York.

What a shame the celebrations will be curtailed. But I'm sure there'll be phone calls and you'll enjoy the cake, the dinner and each others' company.

I'm sorry about covid interrupting the birthday plans but yeah it is better safe than sorry. Your mom looks great, tho!

Awwwww. So sad about the party. Maybe your neighbours would appreciate a bit of cake. I do love your family for considering that keeping Mum alive for another few years is more important than spending one afternoon celebrating the turning of the current year.

Oh, I do agree with them! It's just sad — especially as one can never know if there will be a chance next year...

Life is so unfair these days! At the one hand there are those who party as if there´d be no tomorrow, and on the other hand those who cannot risk getting the plague...

Oh how very sad. Whilst it will be good to celebrate over a longer period of time it isn't the same. But definitely best to be safe.

It is a lovely picture, though.
