It seems that my computer problems are far from being over. Now the "infernal machine" (OT: Rupert Giles) decided to make frightening noises every time I switch it on. When I switch it off, then on again, the noises are gone, but I've been told this method isn't particularly healthy for the hardware.

Fortunately, my neighbour comes back from his holiday next week. I already have a 2-page problem list waiting for him. Hopefully, he'll kick the service guys' butt who did such a shitty job on my poor comp.

Is this before or after you kick the service guy's butt?? Perhaps you'd be best to pay the neighbour for future servicing?

Well, he was the one who brought the computer to the service guys. There are some things that need to be done *in* the service, alas. Everything else he does himself. Too bad he's not a really friendly person, so I don't like to ask him favours very much. But I do swallow my pride when I have to.

Ugh!! The things one does to fix computers! Are they worth it?

Yes, I think so. How would all communicate without them?

Might be something as simple as the fan being a bit out of kilter (off balance), so don't get too worried.

On the other hand, if you must switch off and on, count to 15 between - waiting 15 seconds before switching it back on gives time for static electricity to discharge, the buffer to clear and all that other mumbo-jumbo stuff I've had techies tell me over the years. Many things are suddenly fine if you switch them off for 15 seconds, then turn them back on. Dunno why. Wish it worked with American politics...
