Computer-related rant

Well, as some of my friends already know, I had a computer crashdown last week. My hard drive is gone, with everything that was on it. Of about 1/3 of my stuff I have safety copies, but not of a great deal of research. I hope the service where I brought the dead HD will be able to extract the data - they're expensive enough to be competent. They took 15,000 Ft just to examine my HD (it's about 60$, but it's a lot of money over here), I don't even dare to imagine what it'll cost in case they are actually able to help. But I'll be happy to pay for it, nevertheless.
Of course, the service guys (a different service) who built in the new HD couldn't care to install the entire Win 98 on it. Now I don't have all those useful little gadgets that made it possible for me to work on my computer without losing my eyesight. Like the Desktop Themes, one of which would provide soft brown and beige background colours instead the eye-killing steel blues and greys. Also, the version they installed has slightly smaller letters in the main menu - also an unpleasant thing for an old lady like me.
Now I have to discover what else is missing and write a looooong list for my neighbour (who built the whole computer for me and is otherwise rather helpful, even if not very friendly). He's off on holidays for the next week and half, maybe that'll be enough for me to finish my list. It's already a page long, including all the programmes he'll have to install again.
Ah, well. At least there is some hope for help. But it's very annoying nevertheless.
