Let me admit something - I'm not interested in sports at all! Other than going to the fitness studio to avoid getting even fatter.

Nevertheless, I'm very much excited by the fact that fencer lady Tímea Nagy repeated her Sydney performance in the rapier category and won a gold medal again. One of our male fencers got a silver medal (I think), and one of our swimmers made it to the finals, despite a recently broken leg.

Before this year's Olympic Games we were on place 8 (or 10?) of the Big List containing all medals ever one. For such a small nation it's a great achievement, I'd say.

It's such a rare moment that I can be proud of being Hungarian. I enjoy it immensely.

:) Oh, I agree. It's wonderful to be able to have some national pride. And even though I have little interest in sports, I think it's a _much_ better way for nations to be competitive than war.

And so you should be proud! The Hungarians are doing very well. Just out of curiosity, what is the population of Hungary?

A little more than ten millions in Hungary itself. Some five million or less in antoher countried, due to migration and - mostly - the godawful Trianon Peace Treaty after World War I, which robbed us of more than the half of our original territory. Those parts went to Slowakia, Austria, Serbia, Russia and Romania (Transylvania as a whole).

Of course, these were parts with a very high percentage of minorities, but they still shouldn't have to take all of it. It was an unjust thing, just because we fought on the wrong side of the war - and it resulted in us fighting on the wrong side during WWII, too. Sad history.

So, half the population of Australia. Hungry is doing well!!

Yes, I remember reading how Hungry was torn apart after WW1. Not fair, now if Germany had been pulled apart instead, WW2 would probably never have started. See, this is what happens when men rule the world.

My mother had the answer to war: settle everything with a game of poker. At least no one dies!

Strip poker? :P Ooh, okay. Naughty Case. Lol. Your mother is a wise woman!

And yes, Hungary is doing well, indeed. :) Cheers!

I suppose it could be strip poker if you like, but remember: who wants to see all the world leader's naked? Now, if they were elves..

Yes, nice a small nation is showing their sporting worth. Go Hungry!!

Yes, the elves could strip poker for the world leaders, maybe.

I mean, some of those people are seriously unattractive!

Maybe it would better to have athletes competing in different sports instead? At least few of the athletes are overweight!

Of course, should you join the Lórien Soap on the Otherworlds board, you could make the Elves do strip poker... or invent the Elven equivalent of it. Now, that would be creativity: keeping the prosa purple enough, so that everything remains between PG-13 boundaries.

Go to The Fool's Corner forum in the Main category. There's all the stuff you need to know about to soap opera.

Or drop in to Edhellond for a short visit. We've discussed the details for the last two or three days or so.

Good, good. I can't wait to see your Elven version of strip poker. The rough plot sketch will allow you to make bored border guards have som fun.

Congratulations to Tímea Nagy, and to the other Hungarian athletes who have performed so well!

The Olympics are unique in that they're interesting even if (like me) you normally don't care a bit about sports. During the Olympics I'll watch events I wouldn't look twice at at any other time.

Thanks. :)

My favourites are the swimming contests, the other thingy where they have to spring into the pool as a team (name?), basketball, volleyball and gymnastics. All the others are, I dunno, either too long for me. Or else our athletes are interested, and I'm so nervous that I simply can't watch.

We have certain... hopes in handball and in one swimming number. But anyone coming up against Americans and Australians in the water has a hard time, of course.

But anyone coming up against Americans and Australians in the water has a hard time, of course.</i. Compared to Australia and America, Hungary is a bit short of beaches. ;-) I like the diving, too, and the swimming and gymnastics, but I'm not a big fan of any of the team sports. I think it's because we see so much of those on TV at other times.

True and true, on both points.

Although I never watch any sports on tv, so for me volleyball and basketball are a new experience every four years. *g*

What I love in volleyball is the almost ballett-like coreography of the players' movements. It's so dynamic, I could watch it all day. Except when our people are playing, of course, that makes me much too nervous to enjoy.
