So, Auntie Clara came to visit us today. No, she isn't really my aunt - it's a peculiar Hungarian custom to address every older female as Aunt and every older male as Uncle, whether they're related to us or not. Mind you, the age difference is usually at least a decade or more - or the one addressed that way is a teacher. I kid you not! I was called Auntie E. by my students for four decades!

Anyway, Auntie Clara came and she and Mum had a jolly old time that included lots of catching up, an apple tart and even some sour cherry-flavoured vodka - about as much as would fill half a finger hut, but still. Afterwards Mum and I decided not to cook today but had leftover potato cream soup and apple tart. *g*

Tomorrow I'll have to do some more serious baking as Mum's expecting three ex-colleagues on Monday. They decided to come and see her while the plague is still relatively low-key; and besides, they're all doubly vaccinated and mostly sitting at home on their backsides. So yeah, we're being reckless in these days.

How lovely for them to get together.

We used to call the friends of our parents aunt and uncle, too — but it seems less common these days.

Party time! Maybe wrap them up and sit them on the balcony to stay ventilated if you are nervous of infections?

I'm always worried to a certain degree but with precautions we just wanted a small slice of life again.

I called all Mum’s friends Tante and Onkel too.

My guess is it comes from German custom, otiginally.

She desperately needed it, the poor thing.

Sister and I called all people, who were friends to our parents, aunt and uncle. Must have been common once, but is no more so. It is lovely to hear that your mum had a nice day, and that there´s more of it to follow! Btw, my niece is named Clara, too! I wanted to have the name for my daughter, but sister was quicker than I was!

I made it down to Cornwall and back, on a series of trains, with an eight/nine hour journey, and no sign of getting Covid, so this bug is definitely on the downswing. (I still wore a mask for most of that journey, however.) I think that as long as you are sensible, life is now livable again.
