Getting up to Mum several times during the night: check.
Food run: check.
Getting caught in the (fortunately mild) rain without an umbrella on my way back: check.
Cooking: check.
Working on tedious parts of a craft project: check.
Visit from the physiotherapist: check.

But I got a nice e-mail (complete with baby photos) from a young (ex-)colleague, currently on maternity leave, and my friend Eenie called me an hour or so ago, so the day wasn't completely wasted, after all.

It wasn't that bad, honestly. Just the usual Alltagstrott, as you Germans say. As Heidi put it: unfortunately, we aren't twenty-year-olds anymore...

It's lovely that you are still in contact with ex colleagues. I more or less broke all ties with my last job, because I hated what it turned me into at the end. Sorry about the rain, but an umbrella plus shopping is always a problem, anyway.

There was a time I almost came to hate my school — had panic attacks every day I left home to work. But then I decided that I was there earlier than Boss Woman and won't let her drive me out. So I penned a huge version of the "Litany against fear" (from Dune), hung it up on the side of my classroom cupboard (my excuse was that I taught English as well at the time) and read it loud to myself in the breaks while I was alone in the room. After a few months, it started to work.

Some days are just like that — life can be very ordinary... but then there is a nice thing to brighten it up, like the baby pics and a phone call from a friend. As long as there is a little leavening we can make the most of each day, I guess!

I don't know how I'd survive without my friends. I need people around me to remain sane, at least most of the time, so lockdown wasn't very good for my mental health. Fortunately, I had so much to do, with Mum and everything, that I rarely had the time to think about it. But after a while you just break down...

And after a while you really find it hard to care anymore.
