Unexpected

I got a call from the hospital today. Apparently, they're going to release Mum at some point during this week. I'll be alerted about the exact time.

On the one hand, it is great. I'll be able to watch over her, see how she's doing, feed her up a little and generally take care of her. On the other hand, I'm incredibly nervous. It's a big responsibility. When Grandma was bed-ridden for half a year, at least there were two of us for the job; and we both were 25 years younger.

Sure, Mum can at least stand up and walk a couple of steps already. And there will be a physiotherapist coming in regular intervals, supposedly. Still, I hope I'll be up to the job and to helping Mum in her recovery.

Exciting that she's coming home so soon, but yes, a daunting prospect. Rest as much as you can while you can. Perhaps there will be some help available if you need it. Glad you will at least have physiotherapists to help your mum get back to normal fitness.

Here comes the hardest part...Can you get a rollator for her? It's handy even inside if there's room enough. I wish both of you strength to master the crisis!

We do have a walking aide: a 4-legged frame, yet not with wheels. It's better so; the wheels would just get caught in everywhere. And we have a raised seat for the toilet which the husband of a colleague will put on tomorrow.

A physio to visit her in her own home will be a huge help, and she will heal quicker at home. By the sounds of things, she's doing very well, hence getting booted out so soon!

I certainly hope so. She's very disciplined and tough like nails, so if only the bone is strong enough we'll manage... eventually...

Could you afford some home help for things like bathing? It is a big responsibility. Over here, Social Services would come and review the home, and supply any equipment.

No-one gives a shit what you do with your seniors over here. I've figured out the bathing part; she hasn't really bathed for years, just taken showers every day, and that's something we can manage without her climbing into the bath-tub.

It's not unusual that people are released soon after such things, and hospitals aren't exactly safe places right now. The most important thing for my mother was to keep moving and thereby strengthening the bone. Wishing you strength as well!

I'm greatly relieved there will be a physiotherapist coming in on a regular basis. Have they advised you on anything you must do to prepare the flat for your Mum's return, so she can get around the place okay?

They gave me zero advice. Fortunately, one of my colleagues has an artificial hip joint and she suggested lots of very useful things as well as giving us the raised toilet seat.
