Admittedly, it nearly caused me a heart attack when the phone rang and an unknown voice told me that it's Nurse soandso from the hospital. Fortunately, I didn't have the time to become really scared because she then told me that my mother wanted to speak with me. She lent Mum her phone - wasn't it nice of her?

Meanwhile Mum has her own means of communication; we've tested her ability to answer the previously unknown phone and to hang up successfully. So her friends will be able to call her from tomorrow on - and so will I! Yay!

It turns out that she didn't get any narcosis but an epidural. I asked her if she was in pain and she enthusiastically told me that yes, right now she is a bit - but she didn't feel a thing during surgery! She found that very exciting. An hour ago when we talked to check the pone, I asked about the pain again and she said: "this way I'm sitting now I haven't got any". Meaning that she's able to sit already, which is good, I think.

Of course we must not think that everything's gonna be nice and easy now. She's still an old person with osteoporosis, so the concern about the bone and the pin is still there. But hearing her voice was a great relief. She's still a tiny bit confused about some things, but she's probably full of painkillers, so I'm not particularly worried about that.

Aside from the Mum-related things (like making her mashed apples with bananas and muesli for the digestion) I did the weekly laundry, cooked a quick lunch - and not much else. Going to the hospital always takes half the afternoon, even though I don't have to change buses or whatnot.

Despite having slept nine hours last night I still feel drained. So it will be an early night again, I think.

That's good news about your mum, so glad you got to talk to her. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that her recovery will go as smoothly as possible.

You must take care of yourself too, so that when your mum comes home you'll be fit enough to look after her. An early night sounds like an excellent idea.

I know. I still remember how it was when we had to nurse Grandma — and there were two of us and we were 25 years younger, both.

It really doesn't get any easier as you get older, but I know you'll manage.

I just hope for Mum's sake that she'll have it easier. She's seven years younger than Grandma was in a similar situation, and seven years ought to count.

She sounds pretty chipper all things considered. Good news!

Now sleep, sleep is good!

Great news! What a relief to be able to talk to her. Drugs linger in the system longer than we expect, but the confusion will fade--especially as she knows you're keeping track of what's going on and she can relax a bit as well. I made müsli for my mother too when she was in the hospital, my grandmother's recipe :)

Hope you are able to take care of yourself, too. ♥
