Mum has turned 89 today. Beware her virtual rose bouquet, sent via e-mail from the German side of the family:

I got her a big bag of Lindor chocolate balls, myself. She's very fond of those, and the flat is already so full with knick-knacks that we no longer buy each other anything that couldn't be eaten, drunk or used for beauty purposes.

Other than that, it was a quiet day. She got half a dozen phone calls from old friends, old colleagues and from Little Emma's grandmother. As expected, the rest of the family didn't give a sh*t, but that wasn't much loss. We don't, either; although one would think that the only one still alive from her generation would have deserved a bit of caring. But we're related to selfish idiots, mostly.

I've made a small cheesecake with mixed berries and Pauk Hollywood's spinach, feta and pine nut parcels. Mine didn't turn out as pretty as his, but they were yummy enough, with a mixed salad and a small bottle of cidre afterwards. I've tried to find the number candles for the cake that I bought last year (we decided that since the virus stole a year of our lives, we can still declare her 88, especially as the craft shop where I could have bought replacement candles had closed in the meantime), but Mum put them away with so much care that we didn't find them. So there were no candles this year. A shame, really, but it couldn't be helped.

Accidentally, this is also the birthday of [livejournal.com profile] holcz_agi, whom I happen to have known for 22 or so years. She used to be my student for 6 years of lower and upper primary and came to me for private German and English lessons during high school and university. She's a teacher herself, now, and we're still in contact. I'm very proud of her.

The (not very much) festive meal took me half the day, so I only did a tiny bit of writing afterwards and then fell asleep in front of the telly. Crafting will have to wait until tomorrow when we'll be eating leftovers from today and no-one will have to cook.

89 is pretty impressive, and from what I've seen, she's looking great for her age!

Well, no longer as great as on the photo I posted lately — there have been a couple of years since then, I think perhaps three or four — but still well enough, I think.

Well, that was not a year of life, after all — it was a life of survival, which is a big difference!

Please give your Mum my very best wishes, and congratulations — I almost feel as if I know her through your journal.

I hope you can celebrate next year with a trip to somewhere nice, even if just her favourite café, but in the meantime your celebratory meal sounds very tasty.

I do mention her a lot, don't I? *g*

I so hope that next year we'll at least be able to go to our favourite café indeed. I miss the place... and the excellent beverages they serve. *sigh*

Nachträglich herzlichen Glückwunsch an die Frau Mama! 88 plus 1 ist ein stattliches Alter, und das Wichtigste, das man wünschen kann, ist viel Gesundheit!
